- "These aren't pesticides. They've got military-grade bioweapons, be careful."
- ―Hazram Namir
Bioweapons, or biotoxins were deadly chemical weapons of mass destruction. Often designed to target specific species, bioweapons were heavily researched by the Galactic Empire, although the Alliance to Restore the Republic prioritized the destruction of those facilities, preventing them from using the bioweapons on a large scale.
History and usage
Republic Era
Eiram and E'ronoh War
- "If the peace talks are over, then why reignite the war with the klytobacter?"
"A bioweapon against Eiram. Do you not see the irony? After what the queen herself did with her poison? After she backed out of our deal to create an airborne poison and shut down her research facility before that ridiculous sham of a wedding? It's too good to pass up another opportunity to ensure the war continues. E'ronoh will deny it belongs to them, but its very existence speaks to violence in their favor. And so the war will continue. I need conflict to burn like a fire, Binnot. The Path needs it. We need the chaos. It feeds our ability to do more in this galaxy." - ―Binnot Ullo and the Mother

Bioweapons were a threat throughout many major conflicts.[3] During the Republic Era, the rival planets of Eiram and E'ronoh were locked into a conflict that dragged on across the generations. Nonetheless, the usage of poison as a weapon was not befitting of E'roni combat standards. In the incarnation of the conflict that began[1] in 387 BBY[6] during the High Republic Era, Eirami Queen Adrialla agreed to aid from the Path of the Open Hand cult, who eventually demanded she create[1] an airborne[2] poison from her world's Thylefire scorpions. While Adrialla initially did as she was asked, creating a lethal but non-airborne strand, she changed her mind, to which cult leader the Mother responded by dispatching her agents Serrena, Abda, and Axel Greylark on a mission to recover the posion for Path purposes.[1]
After Serrena attempted to persuade Adrialla into resuming poison production, to which Adrialla refused, Abda used a bit of the poison provided to her by fellow Path member Binnot Ullo to kill Serrena for her failure. Abda's own mission on Eiram and E'ronoh would end in failure, however, so she was killed with the poison by Greylark, who had a change of heart after suffering from its effects himself and hoped to destroy the poison himself. Meanwhile, the now-united monarchies of Eiram and E'ronoh—set to be unified by the marriage of royal heirs Phan-tu Zenn and Xiri A'lbaran—decided to keep the last vials of the poison as a last-case defense mechanism for their worlds. After Greylark attempted to destroy all of the Erasmus Capital City in an effort to destroy the poison once and for all, however, the royals agreed to destroy their remaining samples.[1]
After the Battle of Jedha reopened the Eiram-E'ronoh conflict despite the wedding, the Mother dispatched Ullo and fellow Path operative Goi Ganok to the Eiram-E'ronoh system aboard a starship carrying a load of Klytobacter—which was produced within the Path compound on the planet Dalna—for use as an apparent anti-Eiram biological weapon, which the Mother saw as a fitting irony for Eiram after Adrialla backed out of their own poison agreement. The weapon would look as if it was deployed by E'ronoh no matter what denial the planet offered, which would help prolong the war. In the end, however, the Jedi discovered the Path's involvement in the scheme. Ullo also made use of a poison glove, which he would make use of as conflict ignited between the Path and Jedi until it spelled his own end.[2]
Clone Wars
- "There have been rumors that Separatists have been trying to develop an anti-clone virus—biological warfare."
- ―Jedi General Tiplee
During the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, Doctor Nuvo Vindi re-created a strain of the dreaded Blue Shadow Virus, although it was destroyed before it could become widespread.[3] Rumors also spread of a Separatist effort to create an anti-clone virus.[7]
Imperial Era
Assorted uses
Imperial Vice Admiral Perwin Gedde tested ancient diseases on several worlds, raining sickness from sub-orbital battleships.[8] The Imperial Military Department of Advanced Weapons Research initiated Project Blackwing , also known as bioweapon 17-A, on the planet Dantooine. It was a virus capable of turning its host into zombie-like infected.[5]
Coyerti
In the Galactic Civil War, the Galactic Empire researched bioweapons in facilities located on planets such as Coyerti, which was rich with plants and animal life. Coyerti was home to a chemical distillery, which was the target of the 61st Mobile Infantry during the Coyerti campaign in 3 ABY. The distillery was successfully destroyed by a small team of Rebel operatives.[4]
Nakadia
Although the Distillery on Coyerti was destroyed, its weapons were used against the 61st from Coyerti's stockpiled reserves on the planet Nakadia, causing the agonizing death of a number of rebel soldiers including Maediyu.[4]
