Area 3 is a space colony that was attacked by Andross's Empire during the Lylat Wars.
Overview
Area 3 is a large space station situated between Sector α and the Asteroid Belt. It's shaped like a large circular ring, with a functioning city inside it.
History
Built long before the Lylat Wars, Area 3 served as a deep space colony for Corneria. Sometime later, it housed the Gigarilla, a robotic weapon confiscated from Andross prior to his exile. During the Lylat Wars, Caiman, along with a contingent of Androssian units and Pigma Dengar, launches an attack on the colony to retake the Gigarilla. Fortunately, the Star Fox team arrived to intercept them and prevent the theft of the Gigarilla.
Sometime later, Androssians led by Andrew Oikonny commenced another raid against Area 3, although Fox defeated them after warping to the location.
Trivia
The design of the Area 3 Space Colony looks remarkably similar to the rings (installations) from the Halo Franchise, both being large circular constructs that can support life. Whether this was intentional or not on Nintendo's part is unknown, as the similar designs of the Rings and Area 3 could just a coincidence.
