Petrenko

The subject of this article appears in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl.

Hello brother! What brings you to me?
― Petrenko

Colonel Petrenko is a member of Duty who appears in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl.

Background

One of Duty founders and their leading idea-monger at the same time. Responsible for the faction's sacred code, he recruited basically all of Duty key members[1]. He is also in charge of recruitment of new members for the faction[2].

Appearances

Shadow of Chernobyl

Petrenko is found at the Duty base in the Bar, although unlike Voronin and the other Duty members, he is not found in the underground bunker but in an adjacent building at the surface.

Interactions with him are mostly limited to trading. He sells various weapons, ammunition, medical supplies, food and armor, and his offer can be extended by completing Voronin's mission Obtain an Bulldog 6 from Freedom. He also provides a single side mission which requires the player to kill a Freedom member, Twig, at the entrance of Freedom's base in the Army Warehouses.

Development

{{{px This article or section is based on S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl cut content and may contain inaccurate information or speculation.
  • He was the target of a cut assassination mission, Kill Colonel Petrenko, given by Lukash. The mission is not implemented in the game files, but the string tables still contain the mission's name and description[3].
  • He has several idle dialogue lines which can be found in the game files but are not used in the final version of the game[4]:
Quote Audio

Man, we need to get some more fighters from somewhere.

If you do that thing, we do this. Okay? What about this? Damn.

It's hard fighting on your own.

  • The player was meant to be able to retrieve PDAs from dead Freedom members and give them to Petrenko for a reward. Cut dialogue lines with Voronin allude to this[5].

Trivia

  • Normally, it is impossible to trade with Petrenko before giving the Documents from Lab X16 to Barkeep, as Duty forbids access to their base until this part of the main story has been completed. However, this restriction can be bypassed by entering the base from a different route. To do this, the player must go to the entrance of the base, go up the ladders to the roofs of the nearby buildings, and then jump down to the building where Petrenko is found, which allows the player to trade with him earlier than expected. However, approaching the Duty members inside the base will turn the faction hostile.
  • Though he is configured to wield a Tunder S14, he will always appear holding the best weapon available in his wares, usually a SVDm-2 after the Bulldog 6 has been given to Voronin.
