The tenth season of the American animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants, created by former marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg, was initially hinted at on May 21, 2012, where the show was listed for a total of 241 episodes on Viacom MTV International Distribution website. Season 9 was only ordered for 26 episodes, meaning that season 10 had been ordered, alongside 37 new half-hours.[1]
Season 10 was officially mentioned to exist on August 4, 2013 in a promotional flyer for the series, saying that it would premiere in 2015.[2] However, in an article published by POP2it on September 23, 2013 mentioning that the The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water would begin filming, season ten was announced to premiere in 2014.[3] This was also said to be a release date in an EIDR listing registered on October 24, 2014.[4] These dates were delayed due to the production of the second movie, and the delay the movie had caused for production of the ninth season.
On December 3, 2014, Vincent Waller announced on Twitter that there would be "15 half hours" in season 10.[5]
On July 16, 2016, Vincent Waller announced on Twitter that the number had been shortened to "13 half hours" in season 10.[6] However, the number was again shortened to 11.[7]
Season 10 was confirmed to be in production by Nickelodeon on March 2, 2016.[8]
Season 10 premiered on October 15, 2016 with "Whirly Brains" and ended on December 2, 2017 with "The Incredible Shrinking Sponge." The season was released on DVD on October 15, 2019, one year and 10 months after it had completed its broadcast on television.
Production
According to Vincent Waller, season 10's production began on October 12, 2015.[9] Waller also revealed that fans will see a "different flavor in the animation" of the series.[10]
On December 18, 2015, Vincent Waller tweeted some early script work of the first season 10 episode.[11]

The season premiered on October 15, 2016, one year after it began production.[12] Season 10 was in post-production as of late 2016.[13]

Trivia
General
- This season has the fewest episodes of any SpongeBob SquarePants season, with only 11 half-hour episodes.
- This is due to the crew focusing on production with The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water halfway through the previous season.
- Only 11 episodes were produced before the hiatus. The second part of season 9 produced after the movie consisted of 15 episodes only, to complete the given 26-episode order. However, despite still being considered the same season, it was still produced separately.
- The latter half of the previous season and the entirety of this season collectively make up the first 26 half-hour episodes produced after the second movie, matching the standard length of a season. This most likely explains the irregular episode count of this season, which has never been repeated since.
- This is due to the crew focusing on production with The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water halfway through the previous season.
- Along with season 14, this season took the shortest amount of time to be produced, with 205-208 being copyrighted in 2016, and 209-215 being copyrighted in 2017.
- This is the second season to have no double-length episodes, with the other one being season 15. The first was season 1.
- As a result, this is also the only season where none of the episodes have more than one animation director.
- All of the main male characters are on this season's promotional cover. None of the main female characters (Karen, Sandy, Mrs. Puff, and Pearl) are featured.
- This season brings back the format of an extended episode being paired with a short, with "Feral Friends" and "Don't Wake Patrick." This format was last seen in season 7, and would go on to be used at least once a season until season 13.
- Ironically, despite "Don't Wake Patrick" being the only one written by more than one person, it is also the only episode shorter than 11 minutes. This makes season 10 the first one to end with a short.
- Patrick has the most appearances in this season, being absent only in "Code Yellow (but he was mentioned)," "SpongeBob's Place," "Plankton Retires," "The Incredible Shrinking Sponge," "The Getaway," "Lost and Found," and "Out of the Picture."
- 213 is the only episode were Patrick is absent for both segments.
- "Burst Your Bubble" is the only episode in the season where Patrick appears as a minor character.
- 213 is the only episode were Patrick is absent for both segments.
- "Sportz?" is the only episode from this season to not premiere on a Saturday.
- This is the only season not feature Karen's wall form she is only seen in her mobile form.
- This is the last season until season 15 to have no Christmas-themed episodes.
- This season made SpongeBob the second Nicktoon to reach 10 seasons. The first is The Fairly OddParents, although that show ended at that season.
- After "Lost and Found," episodes are mostly no longer PAL-pitched in the UK.
- "Feral Friends" and "Don't Wake Patrick" are the only episodes since season 4 to be low-pitched in certain foreign dubs. The episode was low-pitched in the German and Dutch dubs.
Errors

- Amazon Video erroneously used promotional art for The Complete Eighth Season for the cover of this season. It has since been corrected.
