Pom Pom is a prehistoric whale and an alternate version of Pearl Krabs. She appears in the video game The Cosmic Shake, where she is the chieftain of the tribe that kidnapped Squidward Tentacles and the boss of the Prehistoric Kelp Forest.
Appearance
Like Pearl, she is a large gray whale with blue eyes, red lipstick, and blonde hair, though Pom Pom's hair is tied up in a bun with a bone compared to Pearl's ponytail. Like other prehistoric characters, she has prominent eyebrows and a single tooth sticking out from her bottom jaw.
For clothing, she wears a pink shirt and tutu with a red tiger-stripe pattern, red furred go-go boots, and a green vine tangled around her right wrist as a bracelet.
Role in game
While SpongeBob and Patrick explore the Prehistoric Kelp Forest, they find and solve a painting puzzle that shows Pom Pom, and they later find more paintings showing her ordering her tribe to kidnap Squidward. They then hear Pom Pom nearby, and they enter a nearby room to find her drinking as Squidward is tied up. SpongeBob tries to sneak over and free him but is caught by Pom Pom, angering her and starting a fight.
The first phase of Pom Pom's boss fight has her stomping the ground, sending sandy shockwaves that must be jumped over. Her stomping also drops platforms that lead to supports holding the large chandelier hanging above Pom Pom. Avoiding the shockwaves and Jellies she summons, SpongeBob must hit the three supports and make the chandelier drop onto Pom Pom's platform, damaging it and starting the next phase.
Pom Pom's next phase has her stomping more violently, occasionally create walls of sand too tall to jump over, so they must be sidestepped. Avoiding her attacks causes her to burst into tears and start spinning, her geysers of tears circling around the arena trying to hit SpongeBob. After she finishes crying, the lava under Pom Pom's platform lowers and reveals the supports holding it up; SpongeBob must avoid Pom Pom's attacks and the Jellies in order to destroy all three supports.
After the supports are destroyed, Pom Pom is defeated, letting SpongeBob and Patrick safely take Squidward back to Bikini Bottom.
Trivia
- She is named after the pom-pom, equipment used by cheerleaders; fitting, as both Pom Pom and her regular counterpart Pearl are cheerleaders.
- Promotional art for The Cosmic Shake features Pom Pom wearing a more stereotypical prehistoric outfit, being a brown dress with black leopard spots.
- Considering she shares the same base appearance of her modern counterpart, it is likely that Pom Pom is based on a Livyatan melvillei, an extinct species of prehistoric Sperm Whale known for being one of the very few animals alive when the Megalodon was still around to be strong enough to take the giant shark on and survive.
- If the player defeats Pom Pom without getting damaged by her shockwaves, the player earns the "Dehydrated" achievement.
- Despite the achievement's name and icon relating to Pom Pom's crying attack, only her shockwaves must be successfully dodged for the achievement to be earned.
