"Agent of Mischief" is the seventy-fifth episode of the anime series, Sonic X. It first aired on 15 April 2005 and 15 April 2006 in France and the United States respectively.

Plot

The episode opens on the Blue Typhoon's bridge, Bokkun plays a message from Dr. Eggman. On screen, Dr. Eggman appears in the Crimson Egg, claiming he's been secretly infiltrating the Metarex to uncover their plans, but they've discovered his deception. Decoe and Bocoe appear, warning Dr. Eggman of a massive Metarex battleship approaching with laser cannons aimed at them. Dr. Eggman, unfazed, states that defeat is inevitable and they should face it with dignity. He reveals the Metarex are mobilizing their entire fleet to rendezvous at galactic coordinates 000, referencing a legend about a thousand-year wait ending and night and day becoming one. He suspects something extraordinary happens in that region of space every thousand years, and it's about to happen again. He assumes, correctly, that the Blue Typhoon crew will attempt to intercept them, calling them crazy for trying. He laughs as the message ends, a countdown timer appearing in the corner. Bokkun explains he escaped just as the attack began. Cosmo asks about the countdown. Bokkun sheepishly admits the message self-destructs. Everyone braces for the explosion. Bokkun's voiceover warns them to cover their ears. The TV explodes. Bokkun's voiceover then jokes about how exciting watching TV can be. Cream and Amy express their displeasure at the unexpected explosion.

On Dark Oak's Battleship, Dark Oak and his fleet are in their designated positions. Dark Oak proclaims that the end is near. The wall behind him then breaks apart, revealing a massive tree with a Planet Egg nestled within its branches. Dark Oak announces that the forestation of the galaxy is about to commence, and the Metarex will soon be all-powerful.

In an empty room on the Blue Typhoon, the crew gathers. Knuckles points out the lack of ship controls. Tails reveals that there are controls, just hidden. He presses a button on his comlink, and a command chair and several screens materialize, revealing a secret bridge he built in case the original one was destroyed. Rouge questions if the damaged ship can even fly. Chris, sitting in the command chair, confirms that while the engines are badly damaged, they still have enough power. He presses a red button. Tails instructs him to put the ship into launch mode. The scene changes to Green Gate, where the Blue Typhoon lifts off and soars into the sky.  Shadow observes their departure from the planet's surface. As Shadow begins to walk away, he notices someone approaching. The figure is wearing distinctive black boots calls out, "Hold it, hedgehog!"

On the Blue Typhoon's second bridge, the crew observes numerous explosions in the distance. Cream identifies a large fleet of Metarex ships ahead, located at coordinates 000, confirming Eggman's information. The Blue Typhoon accelerates towards Dark Oak's Battleship, which is surrounded by a vast number of Metarex Fighters, MTRX-1 crafts, two other battleships, and even Eggman's old mothership. Tails orders full engine speed and sets course for Dark Oak's command ship. Chris confirms.

On Dark Oak's Battleship, Dark Oak orders the attack. Black Narcissus, appearing on a video screen, declares they will wipe out their enemies. Pale Bayleaf then replaces Narcissus on the screen, adding that there will be no survivors. Dark Oak nods in agreement. In space, Pale Bayleaf and Black Narcissus emerge from their respective battleships, wielding some kind of swords, and fly towards the Blue Typhoon.

On the Blue Typhoon's second bridge, Chris alerts the crew that two Metarex are approaching. Sonic declares they must be stopped before they attack. Tails orders everyone to their respective ships to launch a counterstrike. Knuckles, Rouge, Amy, Sonic, Chris, and Cream acknowledge the order.

In space, Chris's ship rises to the runway, with Sonic and Bokkun on its wings. Amy and Cream's ships follow suit. All three aircraft take off. Sonic, eager to engage, declares it's time to wreck the Metarex. As he leaps towards the Metarex generals, Chris fires a ring towards him. Sonic thanks Chris and spins towards Bayleaf, who throws his two swords. The swords bounce off Sonic, and Bayleaf strikes him back. Bayleaf then summons his swords again. Bokkun observes that Sonic's attack was ineffective.

Back on the Blue Typhoon's second bridge, Tails orders the lasers to fire. In space, the dual laser cannon targets Narcissus, but he deflects the laser back at the cannon using the mirror on his staff, destroying it. On the Blue Typhoon's second bridge, Tails orders Rouge and Knuckles to the flight deck to intercept the Metarex. They both take off to follow his order.

In space, Black Narcissus lands on the Blue Typhoon's runway, admiring his reflection in his mirror. He boasts about his striking looks, even more so than his attacks. Knuckles and Rouge approach, ready to fight. Knuckles suggests they charge together, and Rouge agrees. Narcissus, still preoccupied with his reflection, ignores them. Knuckles asks if he's even going to fight. Narcissus, seeing them in the mirror, condescendingly agrees, claiming they're too weak to harm him. Rouge retorts that he won't be so confident after she defeats him and then shatters his mirror with a Screw Kick. Narcissus is enraged at the destruction of his mirror. Rouge sarcastically tells him to be grateful he no longer has to look at himself. Narcissus threatens to make them howl in pain and swats Rouge away with his staff.

Knuckles, now angered, draws his Shovel Claws and lunges at Narcissus. However, Narcissus easily blocks his attacks. Simultaneously, Sonic is struggling against Bayleaf, who also swats him away. Chris, seeing Sonic in trouble, flies in and retrieves him. Amy, seeking revenge for Sonic's injury, fires a barrage of missiles at Bayleaf, but they have no effect on his armor.

On Dark Oak's Battleship, Dark Oak observes the ongoing battle. Meanwhile, on the Blue Typhoon's second bridge, Cosmo expresses her concern, wishing she knew what Dark Oak's next move would be.

The Chaotix's spaceship emerges from hyperspace. Vector announces their arrival and offers a "round-trip special" to anyone needing a ride back. Charmy chimes in with a 45% discount. Shadow briefly smirks. Charmy comments on Shadow being a tough customer. Vector adds that first-time customers ride free, grumbling about never again giving lifts to hitchhiking hedgehogs. Espio complains about losing money on these jobs, and Charmy laments their failing business. Vector cuts them off, asserting his authority. He asks Shadow where he wants to be dropped off and begins steering the ship toward the ongoing battle. Shadow warns them to buckle up, as the landing might be rough. The ship flies directly into Dark Oak's Battleship, and is destroyed upon impact.

Inside the battleship, the Chaotix are mostly unharmed, but their detective agency building, which was somehow inside the ship, is completely demolished. Vector laments the loss of their office and the need to rebuild. As Shadow begins to leave, Vector calls after him, expecting a thank you. Espio adds that Shadow should at least explain why he crash-landed them on the ship. Shadow turns back, stating his intention to find Dark Oak for a showdown. He then zips through a wall, creating a large hole. Vector, deciding to make the most of their situation, declares they might as well battle the Metarex too, and walks through the hole Shadow created. Charmy excitedly agrees and follows. Espio, less enthusiastic, shrugs and trails behind them. Shadow, meanwhile, leaves a trail of fire in his wake as he moves through the ship.

In Eggman's cell, the tremors from the ongoing battle and Shadow's movements shake the room. Decoe and Bocoe express their desire to abandon ship. Eggman, overhearing them, agrees it's a good idea and presses a hidden button in his coat.

Back In space, Bokkun's eyes display sirens, indicating he's receiving a signal. He announces that Dr. Eggman is sending a rescue signal. Chris declares his intention to infiltrate Dark Oak's command ship and free Eggman. Sonic agrees. Chris then instructs Amy to continue the attack with Sonic, leaping onto her ship. Amy confirms, stating that she and Sonic will defeat the Metarex with the "invincible power of their love." much to sonic being embarrassed

On Dark Oak's Battleship, Shadow decimates a platoon of Metarex Troopers with a wave of Chaos Spears, demanding to know Dark Oak's location. Elsewhere, the Chaotix are also fighting Metarex Troopers. Espio uses his invisibility to cause two troopers to collide and explode, remarking on the "smash."

Chris, meanwhile, locates Eggman. He declares the area clear. Eggman is pleased, stating they can now break free. Chris warns them to stand back. Eggman instructs Decoe and Bocoe to prepare. Decoe and Bocoe excitedly announce they will finally show their "explosive side." Decoe stretches his body tall, supported by Bocoe. They begin their "merge," Decoe's chest plate opening. Bocoe inserts his head into Decoe for support, assuming "headshot position." Decoe's head opens, and they fire a shell, destroying the cell bars. They emerge from the cell. Decoe complains of a headache, while Bocoe boasts of their inner "mean machine" nature.

Eggman praises Chris's bravery, and Chris thanks him. Eggman then instructs them to hack into the ship's system. He enters a code on a wall panel, triggering a destruct sequence in Corridor D, causing explosions that destroy numerous Metarex Troopers. As they run down the hall, Eggman reveals he's altered the ship's energy output, causing the main power circuits to overload. Decoe and Bocoe praise his brilliance. They outrun the explosions.

In space, Bayleaf and Narcissus notice the explosions erupting across the mothership. Suddenly, Cream launches a surprise attack, firing missiles at Narcissus's face. She declares a bullseye, but Narcissus, though battered, is far from defeated. He angrily vows revenge for the attempted damage to his "perfect face" and pursues Cream.

Meanwhile, on the Blue Typhoon's runway, Knuckles instructs Rouge to give him her hand. Rouge makes a playful remark about his sudden romantic gesture. Knuckles clarifies, telling her to hold tight. He grabs her and spins her around in circles before executing a Spin Throw, launching her at Narcissus. Rouge then delivers a powerful Screw Kick to Narcissus's back, sending him crashing into Bayleaf. Both Metarex generals are sent flying.

On Dark Oak's Battleship, Shadow interrogates a severed Metarex Trooper head, demanding to know Dark Oak's location. Seeing an entire army of Metarex Troopers before him, he discards the head, which explodes, and prepares to engage the new wave of enemies. Meanwhile, on the bridge of Dark Oak's Battleship, a Metarex Trooper reports Shadow's approach. Dark Oak issues a chilling order: dismantle the hull and outer structure of the ship. The Metarex Trooper confirms the order.

The ship abruptly begins to break apart into perfectly square chunks. Bocoe exclaims that the ship is falling apart. Eggman realizes that the Metarex are intentionally destroying their own ship to eliminate them. The floor suddenly gives way, and Eggman, Decoe, Bocoe, and Chris fall into the room where the Chaotix are located. Chris lands on Espio. Vector asks if he's okay, and Eggman inadvertently crushes Vector.

Elsewhere on the ship, Shadow continues his fight, destroying the Metarex Troopers in his path. As the ship continues to disintegrate, Shadow manages to ride a large segment of the collapsing ship away from the destruction.

In space, Chris and the Chaotix have safely escaped the destruction of Dark Oak's Battleship. All that remains is the enormous tree, with Dark Oak standing atop it, flanked by Bayleaf and Narcissus. Sonic, observing this, makes a sarcastic remark about them building a treehouse, sweatdropping at the absurdity of the situation as Dark Oak raises his hands. On the Blue Typhoon's second bridge, Tails reports a distortion in the local gravity field, accompanied by a bright glow. He notes the rapid expansion of the distortion and wonders what is happening.

The Planet Egg emits an intense light. Dark Oak proclaims the end of the thousand-year wait, the unification of night and day, and the merging of two worlds. The space around Dark Oak ripples and glows, revealing a gigantic planet – Planet Aqurius. This planet is unique, appearing to have two suns, one on each side. Back on the Blue Typhoon's second bridge, Cosmo recognizes the Planet Egg and repeats Dark Oak's words about the thousand-year wait, the merging of night and day, and the joining of two worlds. A massive ripple occurs on one side of Aqurius. At the planet's north pole, the giant tree can be seen, its roots spreading across the surface of Aqurius.

On the Chaotix's spaceship, Dr. Eggman explains the phenomenon: a space-time rupture occurring every thousand years in this part of the galaxy. The light they see is breaking through from another universe, and he believes they are all doomed. Chris observes Tails's readings, who reports an immense, unreadable energy surge from the phenomenon. Chris relays this to Sonic, who resolves to stop Dark Oak before he destroys the galaxy. Sonic spins towards Dark Oak, who remains atop the tree. Shadow, also witnessing the events, declares his intent to stop them before the "forestation" begins, and leaps towards Dark Oak as well.

Dark Oak, confident in their imminent victory, proclaims they are on the verge of galactic transformation, and no one can stop them. The tree, containing the Planet Egg and all seven Chaos Emeralds, glows intensely, throwing Sonic and Shadow back. Chris's ship catches Sonic, and Amy's ship catches Shadow.

Pale Bayleaf and Black Narcissus explain that the Planet Egg (water) and the Chaos Emeralds (light) are their sources of power. Dark Oak, arms outstretched, declares that the water and light, essential for plant growth, will now give birth to "FORESTATION!" The roots of the tree spread deep into Planet Aqurius. Dark Oak proclaims this the moment the Metarex have awaited, the beginning of perfect order and peace for the galaxy and the universe. The armor of Dark Oak, Pale Bayleaf, and Black Narcissus collapses as they enter a final stage, similar to Mover Mode. They grow larger and more bark-like, becoming monstrous, tree-like beings. They proceed to destroy the entire Metarex fleet, nearly destroying the Crimson Egg in the process. The roots spread across the entire planet. The fake Chaos Emeralds on destroyed planets begin to glow. The transformation is complete. Dark Oak, Pale Bayleaf, and Black Narcissus have become a three-headed dragon - Final Mova. The seven Chaos Emeralds are embedded in Dark Oak's forehead. Everyone can only stare in awe and terror.

On the Blue Typhoon's second bridge, Tails asks what they are. Dr. Eggman, appearing on a video screen, explains that they are in the final stage of the Metarex forestation project. The galaxy will be overtaken by plants, and all animal life will be wiped out. Cosmo insists they must attack, and Tails orders all ships to launch missiles.

Back In space, the combined missile attack from everyone has no effect on Bayleaf. He roars, sending the Chaotix's spaceship reeling. Sonic and Shadow then attempt a combined attack on Final Mova, but the monstrous tree-dragon extends massive roots, blocking their path. Chris and Amy narrowly avoid the roots. Sonic cuts through some of the roots, while Shadow uses Chaos Spears to destroy others. The Blue Typhoon fires smoke bombs at Final Mova, but the creature easily clears the smoke. Dark Oak then targets Cosmo, declaring "Farewell, White Seed!" Just as he's about to attack, Sonic grabs onto Oak as he extends towards the Blue Typhoon. Amy yells at Sonic to let go.

Inside the Blue Typhoon, Dark Oak breaches the hull, throwing Sonic down a corridor. He then fires an energy beam at Sonic, causing Tails and Cosmo to cower in fear. A lockdown is initiated as Oak fires another devastating beam. Meanwhile, in space, Knuckles realizes that the Metarex are after the Master Emerald.

Dark Oak unleashes a powerful blast, frying the Blue Typhoon's engines. A safety barrier activates around the Master Emerald as Sonic arrives. Sonic vows they won't let Dark Oak take it. Dark Oak then detaches himself from the crippled Typhoon, leaving it in flames and plummeting towards Aqurius. Chris cries out for Tails and Cosmo. Amy, piloting her ship, tries to avoid the falling debris. Sonic pulls Amy from her ship just before it's destroyed, and they land, panting, on a root.

Amy observes that they appear to be losing. Dark Oak looks down at them, calling them pitiful animals. He asserts the Metarex's superiority and offers Sonic one last chance to save himself: join them and help bring "order and peace" to the galaxy. Sonic, still recovering, refuses. Amy pleads with Sonic not to fight, warning him that they are too powerful and he'll be destroyed. Sonic apologizes, but insists he can't let them take over the galaxy without a fight. He tells them if they want to rule, they'll have to get rid of him first.

After a tense pause, Dark Oak declares it will be done, stating they will be happy to eliminate him. He bids him farewell. Small geysers of water erupt around Sonic and Amy. Sonic, in a last act of protection, throws Amy away from him as a massive water geyser propels him into Dark Oak's mouth. Amy screams Sonic's name as he is washed down Dark Oak's throat and into the glowing waters of Aqurius, infused with the Planet Egg's power. The planet takes on a whitish hue, symbolizing the Metarex's idea of tranquility and order.

Dark Oak, believing he has won, declares that Sonic has lost, citing water as his weakness and their strength. He proclaims their imminent spread across the galaxy, confident that no one can stop them now and the episode ends.

Regional differences

• The timer on Bokkun's television bomb has been changed in the English dub.
• In the English dub, the scene of Bokkun explaining that Eggman, Decoe, and Bocoe have been captured by the mothership removes the animation of Decoe and Bocoe getting caught and Bokkun running away.
• After Bokkun's bomb explodes, Bokkun laughs at everyone before receiving a slap from Knuckles. The dub changes this to Bokkun trying to make a joke about it, before being told off by Cream.
• Certain scenes have been rearranged for the English version. Two examples include: a scene of Dark Oak dramatically posing as the Chaos Emerald in the tree is revealed is moved to the beginning, as well as a different scene of Shadow getting cornered by the Chaotix.
• The whole scene of the gang conversing as the Blue Typhoon takes off, including a scene where Rouge flirts with Knuckles after he tries to stop Sonic from worrying Cosmo, was wholly cut.
• A scene of Cosmo running off from the gang, saying she'll only be in the way of their success, followed by Tails convincing her to return, was removed from the dub.
• Cosmo flashbacking to previous episodes as she states in her mind that she total confidence that Dark Oak will be defeated is cut from the dub.
• Vector complains to Espio that Shadow "should be more respectful to recurring characters", followed by Espio and Charmy reinforcing their status as extra characters. The dub changes this to Vector saying "That's the last time I pick up a hitchhiking hedgehog." and the other two complaining on a loss of money paid to them.
• A close-up view of Black Narcissus and Pale Bayleaf is deleted in the dub.
• The scene of the Chaotix debating on the loss of their office was cut in the dub.
• The scene of Vector stating he thought that the Chaotix would earn payment by following Bokkun was cut from the dub.
• A close-up of Rouge as she performs her Screw Kick is deleted in the dub.
• When Final Mova is first revealed, it makes quiet growling noises. This is changed to loud roars in the dub.
• Final Mova's original roars are replaced with cheaper sounding roars in the dub.
• In the dub, Final Mova taunts Sonic as he goes into Planet Aqurius. In the original, Final Mova says nothing.

Trivia

• In the Italian version, after Bokkun's bomb exploded, Cream incorrectly speaks with a pitch effect.
• This is the only time in Season 3 to have Bokkun use one of his Televison Bombs and the last time he does so in the show. Notably even Bokkun forgot about them exploding.
