Hanma Yagyu

Hanma Yagyu (柳生 磐馬, Yagyū Hanma) is a character who is exclusive to the Samurai Shodown 64 iterations. Although they are members of the same clan, he is not directly related to Jubei. He is voiced by Takeshi Watanabe.

Story

He is an expert inventor of the Yagyu clan. One day, he was ordered by his superiors to observe a rival clan. To do this, he slipped into the clan under the guise of a bodyguard for the princess. The princess instantly found Hanma to be an enjoyable character because of his smiling face and appointed him as her personal bodyguard. However, one day, the father of the princess told Hanma to go investigate the mysterious puppeteer.

Shortly before he left, he created a robot version of himself, called Karakuri Hanma (his bust form) to ensure the safety of the princess. However, in his over zealousness, he had made a mistake in the programming, causing it to attack her. Realizing what occurred, he was forced to come to her rescue and destroy his creation.

Personality

Hanma is an amicable man, always seen to be smiling. He bears a caring heart towards the princess and his sovereign.

Fighting Style

He relies on his arm cannon for long range. In close encounters, his Shura/Slash form relies on various grapples, and his Rasetsu/Bust form (present only in Samurai Shodown 64) relies on boxing techniques instead. Several of his techniques such as an aerial body slam and the aforementioned arm cannon resemble those of Sieger.

It was also mentioned that his interest in "Zwarigani" (Sieger's weapon) and attempt to recreate it led to creation of his very own arm cannon, "Boulder Slicer".

Etymology

• The name Hanma means "rock, crag, cliff, wall (in a mine)" (磐) (han) and "horse" (馬) (ma).
• Hanma's surname Yagyu means "willow" (柳) (yag) and "life, living" (生) (yu).

Trivia

• He becomes completely bald if his 2P palette is selected in the games he appeared in.
• The image on his back seems to be the Tokugawa crest with some kanji written over it.
