Gracq Mine

The Gracq Mine is a location in Stain'd-by-the-Sea. It is owned by the Gracq Family, and as Mr. Gracq left town, it is now under the care of Marguerite Gracq.

Description

The Mine and cottage seem to be at the edge of Stain'd-by-the-Sea, though not too far from The Lost Arms. In the illustrations, it seems to be across from a broken factory. 

Mine

The mine entrance is in front of the Gracq house, a large hole with a ladder emerging from it. Various mining tools are scattered around the "browning lawn" around it.

Mr. Gracq believes that all the gold has been retrieved from the mine and left town to seek alternative employment, leaving Marguerite to close up the mine and watch over the gold.^[1]

Gracq House

The house is described as small and friendly-looking, with a moss-covered roof and wide-open, narrow windows. Though not described, the illustrations show it being on a pillar, with stairs leading up to the door. 

The foyer of the house has a carpet decorating the staircase and room with images of the Bombinating Beast, though it is smudged with dirt. Before the door is a large wooden staircase leading to the second floor; the stairs hold several piles of books "here and there." The kitchen and living room are both near the foyer. The windows have thick plants hanging over them, shedding leaves.

The living room entrance is beneath an archway, and is 'pleasant and rumpled." The wooden floor is pained black, though the paint is starting to peel. The room has bright yellow sofas and chairs, though they are occasionally patched up with squares of other bright fabrics, beside a large reading lamp made from a miner's helmet.

On the walls are several portraits of Finnish poets that belonged to Ms. Gracq- Henry Parland (which was later damaged by an accidental fall), Paavo Cajander, Katri Vala, Eino Leino, Otto Manninen and Larin Paraske.

Mr. Gracq's workshop is kept locked up, with the only key first belonging to him and then to Marguerite. The workshop is where Mr. Gracq melted down and stored the gold before forging it into nails and painting them black to disguise them; several jars are filled with these nails. It also includes tools, such as a hammer.^[1]
