Guyaku (故崖窟 Kogaikutsu , "Ancient Cliff Cave") was the Outlaw considered to be one of Flame Haze's key bases in Central Asia. It was managed by a veteran Flame Haze, "Rider of Jade Crest" Nam.
Function
Guyaku was located in a certain narrow, shallow basin at the southern side of the foothills of the Tian Shan mountain range. Although it is at the foothills, the Tarim Basin, which lies to the south, has an elevation of at least 700 meters above sea level. Therefore, this inconspicuous basin the Guyaku situated is as high as an ordinary mountain peak. It was the only and largest Outlaw in the vicinity of the Tarim Basin.[1]
Guyaku was built utilizing the temple ruins of an ancient cliff cave, hence the name. While it resembled a small hut made of old wooden planks on the outside, this Outlaw's internal structure was quite elaborate, consisting of three layers; It had one ground floor and two additional underground floors.[2]
- First floor (ground floor): a tavern with lodgings that handled Outlaw operations. This floor also houses a Tessera, wireless electronic devices, various maps and nautical charts. Even though it was called a tavern, there were no chairs or tables; only carpets with cushions to sit on. Occupying one wall were shelves with many liquor bottles on them.
- Second floor (underground): a warehouse for storing supplies.
- Third floor (underground): an underground dojo, which used to be the monk's quarters during its time as a monastery. It had many stone buddha statues lining the walls.
Thus, in terms of scale, it was one of the larger Outlaws.[2]
Recent events
Around two years before the main story begins, Liu Yang was working with Dede to investigate Bal Masqué's activities in Central Asia, using Guyaku as their base of operation under Nam's hospitality. During the investigation, Dede retreated for rest, but subsequently disappeared without a trace before reaching Guyaku. He later left the Guyaku to search for Dede's whereabouts and investigate the enemy he might have encountered. At Kashgar, he perished when encountered Dede's killer, the Crimson Lord Sabrac.
Just before the main story begins, Sabrac launched an attack on the Guyaku; he destroyed the Outlaw, along with its director and operatives, to set a trap for the Engage Link. Prior to his, Guyaku was one of a few places where Pheles, Johann and Wilhelmina Carmel could take a rest without worrying about their pursuer. When the group came to visit the caring Nam and sociable mountaineers, they only found the Guyaku in ruins and human skeletons. They decided to venture inside the Guyaku to confirm Tessera's location and find the culprit. As they went down to the third floor, they were ambushed by Sabrac and the fight began. Sabrac ultimately defeated them and managed to inflict a near-fatal injury on Johann. They escaped to the surface. Pheles sealed Johann inside the Reiji Maigo and carried Sabrac away from the area with her spell Mistral.
Operatives
Excluding Nam, there are only temporary operatives like liaisons from cities, engineers that came to work on equipment, and mountaineers that guide them.[3]
