Ooze is a type of hazardous chemical featured in Serious Sam's Bogus Detour.

Overview

Ooze is a green mutagenic liquid made up of various chemical compounds and toxic fluids. The ooze was created by the Orcs, once ordinary Zorgs, who had become hideously mutated after an attempt to get their skin back, which they lost due to their homeworld's sun emitting harsh solar radiation after becoming a red giant.[1]

Effects

The ooze is highly toxic and unstable, causing any organic matter that comes into contact with it to become mutated and hideously deformed.[1]Any living thing that comes into contact with the chemical undergoes extreme mutations and deformities, and becomes extremely aggressive towards any non-mutated creature.[2][3] Whenever Sam or one of Mental's forces steps in it, it rapidly depletes their health until it kills them, which could imply that ooze doesn't always react the same way with a living thing. Either that or the chemical takes time to mutate an organism istead of being an instantaneous reaction.

Not only does the ooze deform and mutate anything it comes into contact with, it also grants strange abilities to those that have been contaminated. Infected Tortoises, for example, grow four times larger than normal size, and gain the ability to tuck into their shell and fire spikes at their prey.[2] In the case of Infected Fish, they underwent rapid evolution; sprouting legs, gaining human-level intelligence, and learning how to make tools to use them as weapons to attack their enemies.[4]

Due to the chemical's instability, it can even come alive by itself, creating small green blobs called Ooze Spawn, which are usually found in barrels. Like wildlife exposed to the ooze, Ooze Spawn will target non-infected lifeforms. Ooze Spawn is relatively short-lived, however, and will eventually explode.

Application

Despite being a biohazard, the Orcs are not affected by the ooze (though they can still take damage from it) due to having already been exposed to it. The ooze is frequently stored in barrels, but these are not kept very secure, and tend to leak out and flood the Orc bases and other areas.[5] The Orcs sometimes dump the barrels of ooze into the Earth's oceans to dispose of them, which in turn pollutes the water and mutates anything living in the oceans.

On the Orcs' research base on the Moon, they kept ooze more securely contained inside glass vat containers, though they were more susceptible to being broken this way, allowing ooze spawn to escape.

Transporting ooze was not always an easy task, considering its toxicity. To counter this problem, the Zorgs came up with an easier method by creating the Oozegun, a utility tool that was used for spewing ooze into containers for shipping. The tool was later modified to be used on the battlefield by the Orcs.[6]

History

Orcs ooze

The ooze was created by the Zorgs using various experiments in an attempt to get their skin back after losing it due to intense solar radiation from the star on their home planet. While the ooze did give them their skin back, it also hideously mutated them, making them grow larger and turning their skin green. This made them look completely different from the ordinary Zorgs, who begun calling themselves the "Orcs" to separate them from the unaffected Zorg population.[1]

When the Zorgs found out about the ooze, the hazardous checmica was banned, and the Orcs were shipped off to the planet Orazio. There, they founded a wide-scale planetary mining company, the Altani Corporation. When Mental found about the company, the Orcs, and the ooze they used on themselves, he forged an alliance with the company, renaming the company to Mental-Altani.[1]

After Mental discovered the Orcs' company and the ooze, he had the Orcs produce the ooze again on a massive scale, and then had them go to any planet they could find that harbored life, including Earth. Once they arrived on their desired planet, they would test the ooze on the planet's lifeforms, wrecking havoc on its ecosystems. Sometime later, Mental-Altani found Earth and set up various bases and research facilities on the planet, while also contaminating its soil and water and infecting its wildlife.[5] Some of the creatures that became infected started sprouting legs and gained intelligence, while other lifeforms, such as carnivorous plants, developed an appetite for humans.[7]

As Mental was interested in the ooze and its strange properties, he wanted the Orcs to use it on his troops to enhance some of the units in his army, such as Gnaars. In one example, the scientists experimented on the Gnaars and exposed them to the ooze, creating the Infected Gnaar. Unfortunately for them, their attempts to create an enhanced, loyal being failed, resulting in the Gnaar becoming aggressive towards its creators, and even turning on their own unmutated kind.[2]
