Humvee

This subject appears in Serious Sam 4. This subject is from the Mental War era.

The Humvee is a light utility vehicle that appears in I Hate Running Backwards and Serious Sam 4. It is the standard land transportation vehicle used by the Earth Defense Force.

Overview

The Humvee is a lightly armored four-wheel drive utility vehicle used by the Earth Defense Force. Originally, they belonged to the United States military, but were bought into action during the Mental War. They saw heavy usage during the Tunguska Offensive.[1][2]

In I Hate Running Backwards, the Humvee appears as a different vehicle resembling a Willy's MB jeep.

Application

EDF escorting Triple-A into Rome

Humvees are primarily used for escorting military personnel and squads of soldiers from one location to another, or for carrying light cargo such as supplies, and weapons. They often travel in a convoy to reduce the chances of separation or isolation during travel.[1] While this is a more efficient means of keeping squads of soldiers or high-ranking personnel together, this rendered convoys extremely vulnerable to enemy attacks and resulted in higher casualties compared to traveling in just one or two Humvees.[1]

Humvees are lightly armored, which makes them vulnerable to attacks from opposing forces, especially from the air. Bombs dropped by aircraft, such as Octanian Raiders, were able to make quick work of Humvees; a single bomb was sufficient enough to destroy the vehicle and/or cause confusion and panic in a convoy, which could render havoc.[1][3]

Like in Serious Sam 4, the Humvee in I Hate Running Backwards has low health, which can make it it vulnerable to attacks or being hit by large objects on the road. If the Humvee is destroyed while the player is driving it, they will die.

Weaponry

Humvees used by the EDF have limited weaponry, and are only seen equipped with heavy machine guns, such as the M2 Browning machine gun. In I Hate Running Backwards, the Humvee has a minigun mounted on its rear, which can be used to fend off enemies. This minigun deals a good amount of damage and is very effective against strong enemies such as Sirian Werebulls.

Appearances

I Hate Running Backwards

The Humvee is quite a rare vehicle, and has a slim chance to appear in the "A King's Tail" stage.

Serious Sam 4

Several Humvees appear throughout the game's campaign. Two Humvees are seen escorting a convoy of Alien Artifact Acquisition SUVs through the streets of Rome as they rendezvous with Father Mikhail.[1] Many more Humvees are seen later in the game in the levels "One for the Road" and "Anathema Unto God".

The player cannot drive the Humvee, unlike other vehicles that appear in the game, as they are intended for cutscenes.

Tactics

I Hate Running Backwards

  • The Humvee is mainly used for getting a large amount of Mojo, so the player should try to get many as possible as they can.
  • The only enemies that appear while driving the Humvee are Werebulls, though they are not much of a threat, as they can be easily killed with a few bullets or can be avoided.
  • As the Humvee has a low amount of health, the player should carefully look at the road while they are riding the vehicle.

Behind the scenes

  • The Humvee (among several other military vehicles) was scheduled to appear in T.E.O.R (a cancelled game developed by Croteam) at one point, as seen in a screenshot. As the game never made it past development stage, the Humvee was ultimately scrapped.

Trivia

  • The Humvee does not appear in Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem, despite many other EDF vehicles such as trucks being seen in parts of Siberia. It's likely that the heavy snow and rough terrain was unsuitable for Humvees, thus the EDF had to use other forms of transport.
    • In the Serious Editor, though, the Humvee can be placed into custom worlds. However, since it cannot be driven or used by the player, its only intended purpose is to serve as a prop.
