Anri is the princess, and later Queen of Guardiana. She is also a talented mage and one of the best magic users within the Shining Force.
Appearance
Anri has long silvery white hair with bangs that cover one of her eyes. She wears royal mage robes, complete with cape and large paldrons on her shoulders over her puffy dress sleeves.
Later when she is older her hair turns more purple, and she wears ruby earrings.
Background
Anri was born as the daughter to King Guardiana. When she was younger she used to sneak out of the castle to engage in her hobby of drawing, wishing to sketch the landscapes around Guardiana. However, she soon got in trouble for leaving the safety of the castle, and was forced to remain inside. She then began to focus on drawing people, and whilst the people at the castle were at first thrilled to be drawn by the princess, she began to pester people too much with her requests for them to pose, causing them to make excuses and run away. For a while she just drew cats.
Anri also admired the knights that worked for her family, and attempted to train in the same way they did, but had no aptitude for anything physical becoming exhausted easily.
Eventually Anri began to study magic, finding a new passion in reading about magic. These books fascinated her, and she was revealed to have a talent for it. One day whilst practicing her magic up in the mountains she came across an exhausted elven mage, Tao, who had been wandering in the wilderness for days. As Tao had caught a fever, Anri nursed her back to health, staying by her side and brought her back to Castle Guardiana where she became Anri's close friend and worked as her maid.
Eventually Anri's magical studies could no longer be contained by Guardiana, as very few in the kingdom had any magical ability, and she set out to study at Manarina's Arcane College where she vastly improved in her skill. However, whilst she was away studying, Runefaust had invaded her kingdom, and her father was killed by Kane. When Max and the Shining Force arrived in Manarina, they gave her the tragic news of her father. Overwrought with grief, Anri ran away to grieve, but was reminded by Max of her duty to Guardiana. Vowing revenge on Kane, Anri joined the Shining Force and aided Max on his quest.
After the Dark Dragon is defeated and Max sacrifices himself to seal it with the Chaos Breaker, Anri returns with a heavy heart to Guardiana. She begins to help restore Guardiana, becoming it's new ruler as it's new queen.
Anri ruled fairly for twenty years, having her fellow Shining Force allies Lowe and Ken as her personal advisor and captain of the knights respectively. One day, some missionaries from Cypress appeared at their doorstep and despite brutally attacking her guards, she allowed them to talk, wishing to forge a peace between their nations. Woldol, the man in charge of the invasion presented a jewellry box, claiming it was a gift from the King of Cypress for her. Encouraged to open it, Anri looked inside but was immedietly placed into an eternal slumber from the trap. Woldol told Lowe and Ken that only the King of Cypress could resolve the curse and fled. Lug and a band of other warriors were sent to kill the king of Cypress to break the curse, but were unfortunately captured.
When all hope seemed lost, Lug's son Ruce appeared with Shade, Hans' son, Apis, Ken's son, Wendy, Tao and Diane's sister, and Sig, the nephew of Gong. Together with their leader, a stranger known as Nick, they were to form a new Shining Force that would set out to Cypress and save Anri from her curse.
Nick and the new Shining Force managed to kill Woldol and the King of Cypress and Anri was restored to normal. In return Nick's arm was transformed to stone. Anri swore to give Nick any aid he may need in his own quest to restore his arm to normal.
Trivia
- Anri has a unique item in Shining Force known as the Kitui Huku or 'Daring Dress'. When equipped it will change Anri's overworld sprite into one wearing a miniskirt. It can be located beside the three snipers in the Laser Eye battle.
- In Shining Force the item only affects the overworld sprite, but Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon also adds a battle sprite when the item is equipped. Anri swaps her mage staffs for a fan too.
- According to her conversations with Max in Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon, she doesn't have a particular favourite food and will happily eat anything she is presented with, but she's not a big fan of sweets and cakes as a rule they're too sugary and sweet for her.
- Anri's magical speciality is Freeze, same as Domingo. She also learns Blaze and Bolt magic much like Alef, but joins the Shining Force much sooner than those two making her a useful offensive mage.
