Biography

The Pederson Project

The Pederson Project is a program comprised of a small group performing an experimental procedure that included surgery to cure people of fatal illnesses and diseases for large sums of two separate payments. It involves a group of medical experts that take their patients into an off-the-grid, isolated area outside of U.S. jurisdiction. After the procedure is finished, the patient is then required a special medication for the next week.

Under the Pederson Project Group, Gabriela is a young, local girl who appears as a housekeeper and somewhat of a mentor to Cecilia’s patients. Her English skills appear fairly limited, only enough to speak in basic sentences.

GabrielaAtTheDoor

Gabriela is the first to meet John when he arrives at the door of the Pederson group’s facility. While the pair can only communicate at a fairly rudimentary level, she directs John to the room he will be staying in. On the way, Gabriela shows John apparent photos of her family and credits Cecilia for saving her and her family’s lives.

The Surgery

While not involved directly in surgery like the other Pederson Project staff, before John has his operation, Gabriela presents him a bottle of Tequila as a traditional gesture of good luck. John can’t accept the bottle because of the surgery but he appreciates and takes note of her gesture.

Life Outside The Pederson Project

After abandoning the operation, Gabriela’s true colours are revealed. She is a misguided, lost, young drug addict who is addicted to Oxycodone. She buys her drugs from her co-conspirator, Mateo, who is actually a veterinarian. Gabriela is also revealed to be adept at speaking English. It is clear that she and her co-scammers Mateo, Valentina and Diego are all struggling financially as Cecilia seems to keep the majority of the money for herself and lives a lavish lifestyle in a large expensive mansion, while the others do not. It seems Cecilia and Parker picked people who were struggling finanically or are vulnerable and suffer with addiction, as Gabriela does.

Abduction

Gabriela goes visit Mateo and buy a resupply of oxycodone. He says she "looks like shit" and that she needs to find a new drug dealer as he "is not doing this anymore" saying that he doesn't like to see Gabriela in this state. Gabriela thanks him and leaves and heads towards the "Hell" nightclub and enters bathroom to indulge in her drugs, she is about to get high when someone exits the nearby stall. Gabriela then enters a stall, where she takes her drugs. She is stalked by a slow-walking figure in boots. When she tells the figure the stall is occupied, the figure disappears. Arming herself with pepper spray, she steps outside to investigate only to be knocked to the floor, pepper sprayed with her own can, and abducted shortly after.

The Cons' Game

Gabriela along with the rest of her co-conspirators awaken to find themselves chained up and trapped, in the very same place they "healed" John. As the quartet tries to understand what’s going on, Amanda enters and takes the rest of Cecilia's belongings, as she is not fully awake yet and puts them on a cart in the centre of the room out of reach of the prisoners, while she ignores all the prisoners pleas for help and questions. John enters the room where the four immediately beg for his help. Gabriela tries to plead with him; telling him she "meant no harm." John rebuts her pleas telling her he wishes he could believe her and that she’ll have a chance to redeem herself. John rebukes the group’s pleas by scolding the four for their unforgivable crimes, which resulted in the deaths of 34 people while they collectively pocketed $8 million dollars in profit. John and Amanda then proceed to set up Valentina’s game as the group can only helplessly look on.

The Wire Saw Trap

With enough encouragement from Cecilia and the gang, the hesitant and hysterical Valentina begins to painfully cut her leg; slowly and then faster. After incessant screams and motivation from the others, she manages to fully cut off her leg. When seeing Valentina's leg when she fully amputates it causes Gabriela to gag and cry. After cutting her leg off, Valentina inserts the surgical vacuum into her femur, screaming as Mateo cheers her on. Mateo notices the blood and bone marrow are being successfully transferred to the other machine, to which Valentina faintly smiles. Valentina notices the time is almost up and panics saying "I'm not gonna make it" while Gabriela and her fellow prisoners watch in anticipation and horror as Valentina is close to collecting 3 ounces of bone marrow, as Valentina desperately pleads and screams. Valentina is just shy of 3 ounces when the timer reaches zero. As Valentina fails and is decapitated, her death seen by Gabriela and the other trapped victims, as well as John and Amanda, who are supervising the test. Valentina's body falls to the ground and lands near to Cecilia, Gabriela is seen crying after Valentina dies.

The Brain Surgery Trap

After Valentina failed her test, Cecilia's cell phone on the cart in the middle of the room rings. Gabriela suggests they tie their clothes together to reach the cart but instead, Cecilia finds a sharp piece of metal and drags Valentina's headless corpse to herself where she disembowels her, much to the others disgust. Cecilia uses Valentina’s intestines as a rope to reach Cecilia's cell phone that Amanda and John left in the middle of the room, but Amanda tasers Cecilia and confiscates the phone before she can call for help. Gabriela was intended to be the next person tested, but after hearing an argument between Gabriela and Cecilia and speaking to Gabriela directly, Amanda empathises with Gabriela due to relating to her drug addiction. Amanda is able to convince John to set up Mateo’s game instead.

Mateo initially panics and refuses to start playing the game, but the other players - particularly Cecilia - shout at him to start the procedure, and he does. Mateo is able to successfully cut out a portion of his skull and remove a piece of his brain, but not enough of it is able to dissolve before the timer expires. Panicked, Mateo and the rest of the group watch as the mask's inner coils start heating up before suddenly slamming shut on Mateo's head. The remaining characters watch in horror, as Mateo thrashes in his chair as his head is seared behind the mask. Mateo's thrashing eventually ceases, and he falls limp and dies. Gabriela is seen crying after Mateo dies and is calling out his name in disbelief and sadness.

The Radiation Trap

With her test inevitably being next, Gabriela sits in fear, shaking and refuses to play the tape provided to her by Billy the Puppet. Cecilia reminds Gabriela that if she doesn’t do anything, they’ll both be locked in the plant forever. Gabriela reluctantly plays her tape but quickly stops the tape, John then tells her the instructions over the intercom and starts her game.

Gabriela’s right leg and left arm chains lift her up, hanging her a story above the ground. A radiation machine is unveiled and activates in front of her. Her game is explained by John: Gabriela must free herself from burning to death by the radiation machine by breaking her chained arm and leg with the sledgehammer provided to her. As she’s about to start with her arm, Cecilia instructs Gabriela to start with her foot so she can swing out of the way of the radiation machine. Enduring the burning radiation waves, Gabriela proceeds to painfully smash her foot. Although fairly burned, Gabriela successfully smashes her foot and swings out of range from the rays of the machine. The celebration is cut short when the machine repositions itself in front of Gabriela. Gabriela continues to painfully endure the burning rays as she desperately smashes away at her hand. As soon as she breaks her wrist, she falls to the ground, severely burnt and with broken bones, but alive.

Death

As John instructs Amanda to take Gabriela to a hospital, Parker subdues the pair at gunpoint and forces them to free Cecilia. As Cecilia and Parker turn the tables on John and Amanda, John pleads with Cecilia that they need to take injured Gabriela to a hospital, reiterating that she earned her life. In a moment of heartless defiance to John, Cecilia steps on Gabriela’s neck and despite Amanda's pleading, Cecilia proceeds to break Gabriela’s neck, ending her life and leaving Amanda in hysterics.

Post-Mortem

Gabriela's death is witnessed by John and Amanda and Parker who is holding John at gunpoint. John and Amanda are both angry at Cecilia and sad to see Gabriela die after she passed her test. Amanda is particularly upset calling Cecilia a "sick bitch", Parker looks remorseful and is quiet when Cecilia asks him to put John in the trap.

Personality

At first glance, Gabriela looks like a thankful young woman who is grateful for how The Pederson Project saved her life. Gabriella put on a façade of barely being able communicate in English, often using very basic sentence structures to communicate with John. But in reality, she has no issues speaking fluently in English. She is a shameless con artist and scammer. Not caring about the people she scams, her only goal is to get money to pay for her drug addictions. Gabriela is ultimately a lost, misguided, young soul who fell into drug addiction.

During the course of the game, Gabriela is seen scared and suffering from drug withdrawals. She begs and pleads for her life to John & Amanda, while John maintains a stern outlook on Gabriela’s choices in life, Amanda empathizes and sees her old self in Gabriela to the point of even helping delay her game. She cares for her fellow prisoners and Gabriela tries to encourage Valentina and Mateo in their traps and she is seen crying when they both die.

Trivia

  • Despite passing her test at the cost of her foot and wrist being broken, she is later killed by another test subject, Cecilia Pederson.
    • She is therefore one of the few characters in the series to survive her test only to die shortly after similar to Halden.
  • Gabriela’s relationship with Cecilia serves as a minor foil to John and Amanda’s relationship. While John shows he values Amanda as his apprentice, Cecilia ultimately sees Gabriela as “a loose end” and even goes as far as killing her in cold blood.
  • Gabriela's death at the hands of Cecilia is what likely caused Amanda to slowly stray away from Kramer's philosophy that everyone deserves a second chance.
