Shell, alternately called by many names such as Turret Ring, Circular Trap, Gauntlet, Gondolan or Gondoran, is a recurring enemy in the R-Type Series. This Bydo defense mechanism typically interrupts a pilot's flight path so that the pilot must fly through the ring, where all the turrets have line-of-sight for shooting Bydo Shots. While each turret can be destroyed quickly, destroying the blue core wipes them all out from the inside out (gunpods at the ends may still get shots off as the explosion travels around the ring). However, the ring itself will remain in some occasions. It seems likely that this enemy was originally created by the human forces until it had fallen under Bydo control.

Bydo defense unit. If the control system is destroyed, the entire unit will explode.
It is called Remodeled Gondolan or Gauntlet here. Two of them appear only in Space and this is its first appearance as a minor enemy.
R-Type III: The Third Lightning
The Gun Dutchman, as it's called here, is one of the forms of the Phantom Cell boss rush.
R-Type Delta
Gondoran appears as a boss in Stage 5 in this mission. It looks like it has fallen into disrepair, as some or most of the turrets are decayed and rusted. As is typical, destroying the blue core will destroy the rest of the ring. In this game the ring moves in three dimensions, and only the parts of it on the same plane as the player's ship deal contact damage.
R-Type Final 2
An enemy known as Usborrak appears in Decaying Erosion Cave, and this is basically a colony of small arthropod-like creatures that operate in basically the same way. Gondoran itself appears at Stage X7.0. It looks as though it has been infected by fungal Bydo, but it can be reactivated once the fungus has been removed.
R-Type Tactics II: Operation Bitter Chocolate
This unit appears in the mission of the Coalition and Granzella campaigns.
