Mr. Kowalski was raised on a farm and married a woman. They had a daughter together but his wife would leave him.

Winston Chu Versus the Whimsies
He originally planed for an evening at the movies with his new girlfriend Janelle Summers and his daughter, but her friend Bijal and Mav join in as well, much to his annoyance. They go to the Chu Apartment to pick up Winston. As they go to ramen, his daughter tries to convince him to go for pizza instead. He rejects it at first as Janelle does not eat daily, but Janelle agrees as most places in the city have dairy free options. As they he, he reluctantly allowed them to take their orders to go and they eat in the car. After the movie, he loses track of the kids and finds them outside the theater. As he drives to Mav's house, he and Janelle hear a bird and Mav says it is his phone. Soon, his daughter expresses her fear that he would abandon her for Janelle or she would become close to Janelle only for her to leave. When they arrive at Mav's house, he and Janelle speak with Mav's mother.
