Caesarion (23 June 47 BC—23 August 30 BC) was the eldest child and firstborn son of Queen Cleopatra VII of Egypt, born to her and the Roman general Gaius Julius Caesar. He was the last pharaoh of Egypt, reigning as his mother's co-ruler from 2 September 44 BC until her death in 30 BC.
History
Caesarion was born to Roman dictator Gaius Julius Caesar and Pharaoh Cleopatra VII. His mother hoped that he would unite the bloodlines of Rome and Egypt, intending for Caesar to name her son his heir. However his father ignored him and instead adopted as his son and heir his grandnephew, Gaius Octavius, now named Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (the future Emperor Augustus). Out of rage, his mother hosted the goddess Isis while she offered him as a host for Horus.
Years later, during the civil war between the Roman triumvirs Marcus Antonius and Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, his mother committed suicide on 10 August 30 BC following her and Antonius' defeat the previous year at the Battle of Actium; Caesarion was seventeen and now sole ruler of Egypt. Afterwards, Horus left him, weakening him due to being with him for his entire life, and fled with Isis. On 23 August 30 BC, Caesarion, who had been sent into hiding in the port-city of Berenice, was lured back to Alexandria (the capital of Ptolemaic Egypt) by Octavianus and hanged.
