- "...And my hat."
- ―Jack Sparrow regarding his tricorne
A tricorne hat, also named three-cornered hat, tri-cornered hat, trihat and simply tricorne or tricorn, was a style of hat popular during the late 17th and 18th centuries. It was commonly worn as civilian dress and as part of military and naval uniforms. During the Age of Piracy, many pirates as well as officers of the British Royal Navy and the Spanish Armada had worn a tricorn. Captain Jack Sparrow owned a tricorn hat,[1][2][3] as did Elizabeth Swann,[4] James Norrington[3][5], Davy Jones[4], and Blackbeard.[6] In London, the Captain's Daughter pub has an insigna of a woman with a tricorne, signifying it's a pirate-friendly place.[7]
Behind the scenes
Tricornes first appear in Walt Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean, which opened in 1967.[8] It was first identified as "tricorne hat" in the book Climb Aboard If You Dare!: Stories From The Pirates of the Caribbean, published in 1996.[9] Although only identified as a "hat" in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,[3] Captain Jack Sparrow was introduced wearing a "three-cornered hat" in the 2003 junior novelization for the film,[1] while it was identified as a "tri-cornered hat" in the 2006 junior novelization for the film,[2] as well as "trihat" in a Zizzle action figure for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.[10] Hector Barbossa's hat was a tricorne in some of Mark "Crash" McCreery's illustrations for The Curse of the Black Pearl, notably featured in the 2007 book The Art of Pirates of the Caribbean.[11] The name "tricorn" was first used in the 2006-2007 reference books Pirates of the Caribbean: The Visual Guide and The Complete Visual Guide.[12][13]
In video games, tricornes appear in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow,[14] Pirates of the Caribbean Online,[15] LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game,[16] Disney Infinity,[17] Kingdom Hearts III[18] and Sea of Thieves: A Pirate's Life.[19]
Various LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean material, Blackbeard wore a different tricorne than what he wore in On Stranger Tides.[16] In addition, tricornes were meant to appear in Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned, a video game which was scheduled to be released in 2011.[20] But since that game was cancelled, it is unknown if its appearance in the game is canon or not.
