A hat was a head covering which is worn for various reasons, including protection against weather conditions, ceremonial reasons such as religious reasons, safety, or as a fashion accessory. Hats were also an indicator of social status.
Styles
Bicorne: A broad-brimmed felt hat with brim folded up and pinned front and back to create a long-horned shape.
Tricorne: A soft hat with a low crown and broad brim, pinned up on either side of the head and at the back, producing a triangular shape.
Cavalier: A wide-brimmed hat that was cocked on one side, and usually decorated with a long feather.
Tarpaulin: A flat-crowned hat with a round brim, commonly worn by enlisted sailors in the British Navy.
Stocking cap: A knitted hat with a long, tapered end that hung down.
