"You looking for a bite to eat, boy? Try the Faithful Bride inn. The bread is stale and the meat all stingy, but it's the only place for food around these parts. Of course, the company you'll be keeping will be, well, questionable. All old salts and dock hands—even pirates."
―Thief to Jack Sparrow[src]

This man was a thief and a sailor in Tortuga during the early 18th century, most notably during young Jack Sparrow's early adventures as a teenage stowaway.

Biography

Not much is known about this man's early life, except that he lived as a sailor on the pirate island of Tortuga during the early 18th century. One night he saw a young man asking a deaf drunkard for directions where he might find some food. The sailor intercepted the stranger, a young teenage stowaway named Jack Sparrow, and advised him to go to the Faithful Bride inn, as that was the only place where he might find any food, though of dubious quality. He also warned him most of the inn's visitors were pirates. When Jack asked the sailor for directions, the man demanded payment. When Jack revealed he had nothing except a sack that held a few of his worldly possessions, the sailor grabbed it. However, Jack swiftly took one of the sailor's swords, and a fierce duel ensued. As they fought on the harbour docks, the sailor managed to disarm Jack, but Jack kicked him, and the sailor fell into the water. Jack briefly gloated over his victory, but then he realised the sailor was still holding his sack. As he looked into the water, he saw the sailor coming out of the water on the other side of the dock.[1] Jack eventually reached the Faithful Bride, where he mistook the infamous pirate Captain Torrents for the thief, and stole Torrents' sack instead, which caused one of the usual bar fights.[2] The thief's further fate is unknown, but Jack managed to retrieve his sack three days after the theft.[3]
