- "We spent 'em and traded 'em and frittered 'em away on drink and food and pleasurable company. The more we gave 'em away, the more we came to realize...the drink would not satisfy, food turned to ash in our mouths, and all the pleasurable company in the world could not slake our lust."
- ―Hector Barbossa
Food was any substance consumed to provide nutritional support and energy to an organism, usually of plant, animal, or fungal origin, and contained essential nutrients. It could be raw, processed, or formulated and was consumed orally by animals for growth, health, or pleasure. Human food can be classified in various ways, either by related content or by how it was processed. The number and composition of foods could vary, including fish, meat, dairy, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts, spices and condiments as well as water and beverages.
History
- "What can I be orderin' for ye? Food, wine... the two of ye did me a service today, and I'm mindful of it."
- ―Hector Barbossa to Jack Sparrow and Esmeralda
Fresh food was a luxury on ships, because it soon rotted in the tropical heat. Mostly the crew live on hard tack (biscuits) and salted meat. The captain ate better and the ship carried a few live sheep and chickens for his table.[1]
As Elizabeth Swann was dining with Captain Hector Barbossa in the captain's cabin aboard pirate ship, the Black Pearl, Elizabeth sat at a table filled with food. The aroma of freshly cooked meat wafted through the cabin, causing her stomach to growl. Succulent goat, fresh seafood, hot bread, and juicy pieces of fruit covered every inch of the large table. At the head of the table, Captain Barbossa watched as Elizabeth picked up a piece of turkey and took a small bite with a fork and knife. Her hand shook as she brought the meat to her lips. She was famished, but pirate ship or not, she would remain a lady as she ate the food. Barbossa seemed to disagree, not touching his own plate as he suggested she must be hungry. Dropping her fork, Elizabeth picked up the turkey with her hands and tore into it, grease and sauce covering her lips and cheeks. As she ate, Barbossa watched, his hungry eyes never leaving Elizabeth's mouth. But still, Barbossa did not eat as he poured a glass of wine, offered it to his guest and watched once more as she gulped it down. Unaware of the captain's intense stare, Elizabeth continued to devour the food until Barbossa held out a green apple toward her to eat next. Elizabeth paused midbite, suddenly wary of Barbossa's offer, noticing there was something peculiar in the way he was looking at her, with even his monkey was staring at her, and thought the food was poisoned. Shortly afterwards, Barbossa told Elizabeth of the curse he and his crew were under, in that they were unable to enjoy the pleasures of food and drink.[2][3][4]
