- "Remind me, which one are you? Axel or Pushy?"
"I am Askay. And this is my twin brother, Pusasn." - ―Jack Sparrow and Askay
Pusasn was a pirate from India who served as Sri Sumbhajee's aide and spoke for him during the meeting of the Fourth Brethren Court. He served alongside his twin brother, Askay.
Biography
- "Sri Sumbhajee votes for Sri Sumbhajee."
- ―Pusasn to the Brethren Court
Nothing is known of Pusasn's early life, except that he, at some point, became a pirate under captain Sumbhajee Angia, along with his twin brother, Askay. They served as aides to Angria, speaking on his behalf.[2]
Askay, Pusasn and Sumbhajee were present at the meeting of the Fourth Brethren Court. Askay and his brother stood at either side of their master, ready to speak for him.[2]
Pusasn announced Sumbhajee's choice in the election of a Pirate King after witnessing his brother's death at the hands of Captain Edward Teague. The next day, he accompanied Sumbhajee aboard the Otter and witnessed the battle of Calypso's maelstrom, later celebrating the victory over the East India Trading Company.[2]
Behind the scenes
Pusasn first appeared in T.T. Sutherland's junior novelization for the 2007 film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. In the film, Pusasn and Askay were credited and portrayed by the same man, Omid Djalili.[2] The character's name was spelled "Pusan" in the novelization,[1] a spelling that was done in at least one production draft of the film's screenplay.[5] Jack Sparrow mistakenly identified Pusasn as "Pushy" in the 2009 book Legends of the Brethren Court: The Turning Tide.[4]
In Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio's screenplay draft for At World's End, Pusan had one more line spoken on behalf of the Indian Pirate Lord, Sri Sumbhajee, specifically after Akshay was killed by Captain Teague, in which Sumbhajee "explains that a great misunderstanding has occurred, and avers that indeed the Code is the Law."[5] The scene never made it to the final cut of the film nor the first edition of the film's junior novelization,[1] but was retained in the Special Edition of the junior novelization.[6]
