- "Remind me, which one are you? Axel or Pushy?"
"I am Askay. And this is my twin brother, Pusasn." - ―Jack Sparrow and Askay
Askay was a pirate from India who served as Sri Sumbhajee's aide and spoke for him during the meeting of the Fourth Brethren Court. He served alongside his twin brother, Pusasn.
Biography
- "Sri Sumbhajee proclaims this all to be folly! Hang the Code! Who gives a—"
[Teague shoots Askay]
"Code is the law." - ―Askay and Edward Teague
Nothing is known of Askay's early life, except that he, at some point, became a pirate under captain Sumbhajee Angria, along with his twin brother, Pusasn. They served as aides to Angria, speaking on his behalf.[3]
Askay, Pusasn and Sumbhajee were present at the meeting of the Fourth Brethren Court. Askay and his brother stood at either side of their master, ready to speak for him.[3]
During the meeting, Askay spoke derisively of the Pirate code of the Brethren on Sumbhajee's behalf, and was subsequently shot dead by Captain Edward Teague, the Keeper of the Code.[3]
Behind the scenes
Askay first appeared in T.T. Sutherland's junior novelization for the 2007 film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. In the film, Askay and Pusasn were credited and portrayed by the same actor Omid Djalili.[3] The character's name was spelled "Akshay" in Sutherland's novelization,[2] a spelling that was done in at least one production draft of the film's screenplay.[6] Jack Sparrow mistakenly identified Askay as "Axel" in the 2009 book Legends of the Brethren Court: The Turning Tide.[5]
In Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio's screenplay for At World's End, Akshay had more lines spoken, inquiring, quipping, declaring and decrying on behalf of the Indian Pirate Lord, Sri Sumbhajee.[6] Some parts, like the spelling of the character's name, were retained in Sutherland's junior novelization.[2] In the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - The Journey to World's End book, when Barbossa proposes the Pirate Lords should free Calypso, Askay says "Sri Sumbhajee says Barbossa has lost his senses! Do not let him speak any further!"[7]

- ↑ James "Jim" Carson's calendar of Henry Turner's waiting for Will Turner's return from Dead Men Tell No Tales shows that Will Turner's first visit to his family after ten years of captaining the Flying Dutchman, which is shown in the after credits scene of At World's End, occurred in August 1739, which means the Fourth Brethren Court and Askay's death occurred in August 1729.
