A Marquis was a noble title given to a male of a rank next below that of duke, but above a count. Originally, the marquis was an officer whose duty was to guard the marches or frontiers of the kingdom. The title was mostly used in France but also in England and Germany.
History
When the Red Duchess was falsely accused of conspiring to assassinate King Louis XIV, she was saved from certain death by a marquis who was madly in love with her.[1] Marquis D'Avis was one of the rich pirates of Shipwreck Cove during the 1720s.[2]
