Duke was the highest hereditary title of nobility that ranked directly below the monarch. The individual who held it resided over a duchy (or dukedom). The female equivalent was duchess.
History
During the golden age of piracy one of the inhabitants of Tortuga was known as the Red Duchess.[1] One of the slave traders who occasionally made business with Cutler Beckett called himself "Duke" Wren-John.[2] Over 23 years into his reign, King George Augustus of Great Britain also served as the duke of Brunswick-Luneburg.[3]
