Grimes Pub was a pub owned by Grimes in the town of Saint Martin during the early 1750s.
History
At some point, a barkeep named Grimes opened a pub in the town of Saint Martin on the island of the same name. In 1751, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow wandered into the local watering hole, covered in mud, looking for a beverage to quench his thirst. As Grimes asked Sparrow to show his silver, the pirate traded his prized possession, a compass given to him by Captain Morgan during a battle off the Devil's Triangle, for a bottle of rum. As Grimes handed Sparrow the bottle, the compass began to vibrate, growing stronger until the barkeep snatched it, the trade made. Shrugging, the barkeep threw the compass in the middle of trinkets collected as payment. Meanwhile, Capitán Armando Salazar and the cursed crew of the Silent Mary were released from their imprisonment at the Devil's Triangle because Sparrow betrayed his compass, unbeknownst to Sparrow himself, who took a drink in Grimes Pub.[1][2]
Behind the scenes
Grimes Pub first appeared, albeit unnamed, in Elizabeth Rudnick's novelization for the 2017 film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales[1][2] It was first identified by name in the movie graphic novel.[3]
In Rudnick's novelization, shortly after Jack Sparrow enters the pub, a fisherman arrives holding a net with Jack's sword stuck in a fish. Jack grabs the sword and throws it into the wall on the opposite side of the pub where it hits right between the eyes on Jack's own wanted poster.[2] This was likely adapted from Jeff Nathanson's 2013 early screenplay draft, where Jack and Scrum entered King George Pub in Port Royal, where they were eventully caught by Pierre Kelly.[4]
