Suiryu

Overview
The reason I sought strength was to live an easygoing life one can enjoy.
— Suiryu[1]

Suiryu (スイリュー, Suiryū) is a martial artist and user of the Void Fist. He was a top contender in the 22nd Super Fight and a five-time champion of the tournament.[2]

Later, he joins the Neo Heroes and becomes a Neo Leader.

Appearance

Suiryu is a tall and handsome young man with a lean, very muscular build. He has blue eyes, tan skin, and black hair tied in a ponytail reaching his lower back. He wears a navy blue Chinese-style martial arts uniform, which features white trim, long sleeves, and star-shaped buttons. Under the uniform, he wears metal bands around his biceps.

After he joins the Neo Heroes, he wears a Neo Heroes battle suit.

Personality

Suiryu flirting

Suiryu is a relaxed and carefree individual, often seen with a smile, and is a notorious playboy who prefers spending time with women over training. He is also perceptive, realizing Bakuzan's bloodlust and strongly believes in the philosophy of natural selection, in which the strong will always prevail no matter what.

Suiryu is very eager to fight strong opponents and believes the reason for fighting is to live an easy life without worry. Due to the power gap between him and some of the other contestants at the Super Fight tournament, he is described by Sneck, as strong to the point where he finds himself bored, much like Saitama. As a result, he seeks to fight strong opponents to seek thrills in battle, which is a thing that both he and Saitama have in common.

In fights, Suiryu often holds back to make them more interesting, relying solely on his legs and ultimately defeating opponents with a single kick. He tends to engage in casual conversation during battles, and after winning, he sarcastically apologizes for his strength. While fighting Saitama, he reveals a more serious and arrogant demeanor. Once Saitama's disguise is exposed, Suiryu disregards his true identity, focusing solely on winning at any cost. This shift transforms him into a ruthless fighter who mercilessly pummels his opponent, flouting the match's rules in pursuit of victory.

Suiryu admires Saitama once he realizes Saitama only seeks thrills and not fame or glory. However, after being defeated by him, he begins to fear and respect Saitama, wishing to avoid future encounters and return to his carefree lifestyle. Initially, Suiryu disliked heroes, since he perceived them as cocky and fame-craving and thinks all of their heroic actions, benevolent preaching, and their sense of justice are boring and a waste of time. He believes that no hero, regardless of their strength or nobility, can resolve all crises or eradicate evil completely. This perspective leads him to prefer a carefree, thrill-seeking lifestyle over fighting for justice, a viewpoint that Saitama seems to disagree with.

When Gouketsu attacked the Super Fight stadium, Suiryu defended the other martial artists and refused Gouketsu's offer to join the Monster Association, despite the promise of a relaxed lifestyle as an executive member, as he sees monsters as abominations. Overwhelmed by Gouketsu, Suiryu exhibits fear, acknowledging Gouketsu's superiority in every regard. His pride further diminishes from his previous arrogance when he desperately seeks help from Bakuzan, realizing that he cannot win with his own strength.

His former view of heroes changes after being saved by Sneck and Max, revealing gratitude and respect for the two heroes, who returned to the stadium to save him. After being pushed to the brink of death by Bakuzan, he finally and truly sees the error of his disdained view against heroes, crying out for one to save him, tears in his eyes. Despite his hopeless situation, he maintains a sense of pride, refusing to lick Bakuzan's foot; instead, he breaks the latter's toe, even when it could have been his only chance at mercy from the tormenting monster. This act demonstrates his strong willpower and pride, as he refuses to compromise his humanity like others who surrendered for survival or power. Saitama complimented Suiryu on his tenacity to fight the monsters single-handedly until Saitama had arrived.

After witnessing Saitama defeat both Bakuzan and Gouketsu, Suiryu expresses gratitude and even asks Saitama if he can become his disciple. He ultimately becomes a hero, determined to help people against monsters and other threats.

Abilities and Powers

Suiryu is a martial arts prodigy. Despite spending much of his time slacking off or not taking his training seriously, he ultimately rose to become one of the most accomplished masters and revered fighters in the world. With no record of losing a fight prior to facing Saitama, he is celebrated as a legend for winning four consecutive Super Fight tournaments. He effortlessly defeated two A-Class heroes with a single kick each and advanced to the finals of the tournament with minimal effort. During his match with Saitama, Suiryu demonstrated strength and combat abilities on par with S-Class heroes. Bakuzan remarked that if he could kill Suiryu, it would establish him as the strongest.[3] Suiryu regards "Wolfman" as a worthy opponent and expressed a desire to fight him. In a virtual martial arts battle against Garou, the two proved evenly matched, although the Hero Hunter could not go all out due to a system overload.[4] Garou was sufficiently impressed with Suiryu that he considered seeking him out after their virtual battle, though he quickly dismissed the idea. Following the 22nd Super Fight tournament, Suiryu fought and defeated several martial artists who had transformed into Mysterious Beings, with one likely reaching Demon-level strength.

This display of fighting prowess impressed Gouketsu, the first champion of the Super Fight Tournament who had become a Dragon-level Mysterious Being. At one point, Gouketsu offered Suiryu an executive position in the Monster Association if he chose to become a Mysterious Being, suggesting that by consuming a monster cell, Suiryu could become an extraordinarily powerful monster. This further emphasizes his great strength, as the more powerful the human, the stronger the resulting monster transformation.

Upon joining Neo Heroes, Suiryu immediately becomes one of the Neo leaders, the organization's most powerful heroes.

Physical Abilities

Suiryu lifts half of the ring

Immense Strength: Suiryu possesses superhuman strength that far surpasses that of average heroes. During the Super Fight Tournament, he effortlessly defeated two A-Class heroes, Max and Sneck, with one kick each.[5][6] He could split the fighting ring in half with a single hand chop and flip up half of it with one stomp.[7] His overwhelming strength terrified most of the audience in the tournament, including the security. He was capable of holding back and kicking Choze's energy orb into the air.[8] Despite being in his weakened state, Suiryu could still blow off one of The Three Crows' head with a single kick.[9] With his last burst of strength, he managed to break a toe of the Dragon-level monster Bakuzan.[10] When flexing his muscles, Suiryu shattered the metal bars around his biceps, showcasing his muscle power.[11]

Suiryu vs. Choze all out

Immense Speed and Reflexes: Suiryu possesses remarkable speed and reflexes, able to move and kick faster than normal humans can perceive.[12] He effortlessly defeated Max, an A-Class hero, with a single kick that left the hero unable to react. [13] Additionally, he dodged several strikes from another A-Class hero, Sneck, and defeated him with another kick to which Sneck could not respond. [14] After kicking Saitama into the air, Suiryu quickly appeared next to him, moving so fast that it seemed as if he "vanished" from sight.[15] His amazing speed was once again shown during combat with Choze, to the point that the other martial artists, except for Gouketsu, could not see their blinding movements at all.[16]

Immense Durability: Thanks to his training, Suiryu possesses a tough and resilient physique. Despite being launched out of the fighting ring by Saitama's hip bump, which used Suiryu's own momentum against him, he sustained no visible damage, even when the impact shattered part of the concrete audience stand (though the hero wasn't serious at all).[17] By flexing his chest muscles, they were sturdy enough to stop the sharp horns of Choze from penetrating his body.[18] Additionally, he managed to take hits from Gouketsu, a Dragon-level Mysterious Being, without being knocked out, albeit the latter was merely toying with him.[19]

Immense Stamina and Endurance: Suiryu possesses great stamina and endurance. Soon after his fight with Saitama, he was able to fight and defeat multiple martial artists who had become Mysterious Beings before engaging Gouketsu, a Dragon-level threat, despite being injured.[20] During his one-sided fight with Gouketsu, where he took a savage beatdown from the latter, Suiryu remained conscious while enduring significant pain from his injuries.[21] His remarkable endurance is further demonstrated by the fact that he did not pass out from being physically abused by Bakuzan, who had transformed into a Dragon-level Mysterious Being, despite sustaining heavy injuries from Gouketsu beforehand.[22][23]

Enhanced Senses: Suiryu was able to sense Bakuzan's bloodlust as well as being able to sense Saitama's strength, considering him as a worthy opponent after witnessing him defeating Zakos with one slap.[24][25]

Equipment

Neo Heroes Battle Suit: Suiryu wears a Neo Heroes battle suit, which provides him with a variety of functions.

  • Mobility Analysis: The suit analyzes Suiryu's nervous system and body, with its synthetic muscle reacting accordingly and enhancing his physical abilities.
  • Life Support System: The suit contains a life support system, although it can be damaged beyond function.

Fighting Style

Master Martial Artist: Suiryu is a highly accomplished martial artist, having won four Super Fight Tournaments in a row.

  • Void Fist (冥躰拳, Meitei-ken; Viz: The Dark Body Art[26] or Dark Corporal Fist[27]): This style focuses on maximizing damage output, while keeping a consistent flow of damage.[28][29] After Saitama blows off his clothes, he is shown using hand techniques with moves that involve spinning in a tornado movement accompanied by multiple hand thrusting attacks and punches, as well as a twisting punch that is strong enough to launch Saitama in mid-air.
    • Void Sky Dragon Fist (冥躰空龍拳, Meitei Kūryū Ken; Viz: Dark Body Flying Dragon Fist): Suiryu unleashes a rapid series of punches and hand strikes, creating such tremendous momentum that he spins like a tornado in mid-air. The momentum generated by his continuous blows preserves his mid-air rotations.[30]
    • Void Shaking Tiger Fist (冥躰震虎拳, Meitei Shin Koken; Viz: Dark Body Quake Tiger Fist): Suiryu rotates his fist in a twisting motion before delivering a powerful punch, usually aiming for the opponent's gut. By positioning his foot forward, he can enhance the technique, creating fissures in the ground while stabilizing his stance and pushing off to increase the impact of the blow. He claims that this attack can pulverize a truck.[31]
    • Void Ascending Phoenix Fist (冥躰鳳昇拳, Meitei Hōshō Ken; Viz: Dark Body Phoenix Rising Fist): This technique follows Void Shaking Tiger Fist, where Suiryu executes a twisting punch aimed at his opponent, pushing them backward upon completion. The twisting motion further amplifies the power of his punch, which he used to defeat Choze, breaking through the latter's heavily armored body.[32]

Miscellaneous Abilities

Keen Perception: Suiryu is very perceptive as, through mere glances at the eyes of another, he's able to deduce their nature and their strength levels. He managed to quickly figure out that most heroes in the Hero Association do their jobs for fame, glory, and self-satisfaction. In contrast, by looking into Saitama's eyes, he discerned that Saitama is strong and seeks only the thrill of battle, not fame or glory, an insight that most people are blinded towards the latter's true characteristics.

Quotes

  • (To Max) "Sorry for being stronger than you."[33]
  • (To Sneck) "With or without heroes, all the surviving humans will continue to survive on their own. With or without monsters, the weak will be weeded out. It's just nature's way."[34]
  • (To Sneck) "In the end, 'we' are going to survive either way. The strong guys."[35]
  • (To Saitama) "So you're one of those guys. The way I see it that industry is just no good. I fought some A-class heroes in this tournament, but they were so weak... it's not even worth talking about. The so-called "hero" is just a name. In reality, heroes don't exist. It's just a job, but they pretend to be some kind of benefactor doing good and bringing justice. I think people on their level can't save the world no matter how hard they try. Their effort is useless. Great ambitions. High and mighty ideals. An inflated sense of morality. A heroic sense of justice. The fun life I'm looking for doesn't require any of these. They're just impurities that would lead to boredom. You're strong so you shouldn't restrict yourself with these lame things either. Why don't you choose the fun way of living freely? Just join a tournament from time to time to earn some prize money. Huh? Are you feeling down? I'm telling you my real thoughts because I've acknowledged you. Just see it as advice coming from someone who is living happily.[36]
  • "When people are beaten down into a dark place, they seek the light. No matter how frail or small that light may be, in that light there is still... hope."[37]
  • (To Sour Face, Lin Lin, and Zakos) "I... want to become a hero."[38]

Trivia

Suiryu by ONE
  • In ONE's first storyboard, Suiryu was Lin Lin's brother and used Drunken Fist (酩酊拳) instead of Void Fist (冥躰拳). During the finale of the tournament, he gets drunk, goes all out against Saitama, but loses. Afterwards, Lin Lin comforts him, telling him to work harder in the future. This setting was scrapped because a drunkard vs Gouketsu was deemed too comical and they wanted to show despair. Murata didn’t say who changed the setting.[39]
    • The kanji for “void” and “drunken” are homonyms in Japanese, both are pronounced “meitei”.
  • As a result of being first introduced in the manga, Suiryu doesn't meet Saitama and change his worldview in the webcomic.
  • During a stream when describing what the characters look like in the real world, Yusuke Murata stated that Suiryu looks Italian.[40]
  • Suiryu's name means "Water Current" (水流).
  • Suiryu and Son Goku from the Dragon Ball series share similarities:
    • Excluding the long ponytail, his hair is reminiscent of Goku's unique haircut.
    • Both are strong martial artists who want to fight strong opponents.
    • Goku's design and powers were both based on Chinese mythological figure Sun Wukong (孫悟空), also known as Monkey King. In a Halloween special cover, Suiryu was depicted cosplaying Sun Wukong with a bo staff and riding a yellow cloud.[41]
    • Suiryu's Void Shaking Tiger Fist used against Saitama is a homage to a punch that Goku once used against King Piccolo.
    • Suiryu's Void Sky Dragon Fist resembles Goku's Human Tornado (Ningen Tatsumaki) used against Tien Shinhan in Dragon Ball.

    • Suiryu used to live with his grandfather and sister in the mountains, similarly to how Goku was raised by his adoptive grandfather Gohan, on Mount Paozu. Suiryu's sister also knows a technique called Revolving Turtle Fist, similar to the Turtle Style of Grandpa Gohan.
  • The idea of Lin Lin being Suiryu's sister was later repurposed into the character of Suiko, who was given the Drunken Fist fighting style, originally intended for Suiryu.
  • The event of the Super Fight Tournament never exists in the Webcomic, which results in Suiko, his sister, to be the first one to know Saitama and acknowledge his strength.
