Gion

Gion,[2] better known by her alias Momousagi, is a Marine vice admiral.[1]

Appearance

Gion Anime Concept Art

Gion is a tall, slender woman with red lipstick, long curly black hair that is tied back, and a mole on the right side of her face below her mouth. She also possesses a black spider tattoo on her left thigh.

She wears a Marine coat on her shoulders like a cape, and her sleeves have pink cuffs and the epaulettes are pink. Her Marine coat has a hood, though she usually keeps it down. Underneath, she sports a short-sleeved pink shirt, with a frilled collar and an open neckline that exposes her cleavage. She wears dark brown shorts and black heels.[2]

Personality

Gion appears to be a determined and temperamental woman who is not afraid to speak her mind, even against a legend like Garp. She may believe in moral justice or follow her own view of justice as she seemed bothered that Garp was not the least bit worried about his grandson being in danger of being hunted down by two Emperors, despite the latter being a pirate of the Worst Generation.[3] Gion uses her seductive hospitality to lure all kinds of pirates into trouble.[5]

Like many other characters, Gion has a unique laughing style: "Usafufu" (ウサフフ?).[1]

Relationships

Tsuru

Gion and Tsuru have a close relationship due to Tsuru treating Gion as her little sister.[5]

Tokikake

Gion did not reciprocate fellow vice admiral Tokikake's romantic feelings for her and turned down every date proposal he offered.[6]

Abilities and Powers

As a vice admiral, Gion is capable of commanding a Buster Call alongside four other vice admirals and has command over all units ranked below her. She is strong enough to be considered a candidate for the promotion to admiral, despite ultimately not being selected.[1]

Haki

Further information: Haki

It was stated that all vice admirals possess Haki, so Gion can also use the ability.[7]

Weapons

Kompira Portrait

Gion has incredible mastery in swordsmanship, making her a potential nominee as future admiral. In One Piece Film: Gold she wields a meito sword called Konpira (金比羅, Konpira?).[5]

History

During the Timeskip

Gion was considered as a candidate to become one of the new admirals. However, she did not make the cut, as Issho and Aramaki attained the positions instead.[1] Tokikake asked her out 100 times, but she rejected him each time.[6]

Trivia

  • Gion was created and named by a fan in an SBS question who said that she was an admiral. However, since all positions of admiral had been filled, Oda made her a vice admiral instead. Oda also designed her appearance which, like the admirals, is based on a Japanese actor. In Gion's case, she's based on Michiyo Kogure.[1]
  • Several aspects of Gion's character reference ozashiki asobi (お座敷遊び,?, literally "tatami room games"), which are games played with geisha in teahouses:
    • Gion is said to be skilled at all of these games.[5]
    • Gion's name is likely a reference to Kyoto's Gion district, which is famous for its geisha and has teahouses where ozashiki asobi are played.
    • Gion's sword, Konpira, is likely named after the game called Konpira Fune Fune.
  • Gion's favorite foods are ochazuke and yatsuhashi.[5]
    • Gion's favorite food being ochazuke is likely a reference to the film The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice (お茶漬けの味, Ochazuke no Aji?), which stars Michiyo Kogure.
  • Although Gion was not made an admiral, her alias, Momousagi, follows the naming scheme of the admirals' code names, being a color and an animal. She, along with Tokikake and Tensei, are currently the only non-admiral Marines that share that distinction.
    • "Momo usagi" (桃兎?) literally means "peach rabbit", with "momo" being short for the Japanese word for the color pink, "momoiro" (桃色,?, literally "peach-colored").
