— MR. OUTBACK |
MR. OUTBACK is a character and NPC in OMORI. He is first found at VAST FOREST's TRAIN STATION, and later in ORANGE OASIS starting from THREE DAYS LEFT.
PROFILE
APPEARANCE
MR. OUTBACK is a peculiar individual with the attire of a cowboy, wearing a dark brown vest with a star on it and a long-sleeved light brown shirt underneath. He also wears dark brown pants and boots, and totes a cowboy hat. He has a long white beard which accurately represents his age, which he claims to be around 33000 years, being one of the oldest residents of HEADSPACE in-game. He moves frequently on the spot, swinging his arms from left to right.
PERSONALITY
MR. OUTBACK at first glance is usually shown to be a jolly, amicable person who posseses the demeanor of a typical cowboy. However, MR. OUTBACK is currently more reserved than before and often spends time giving advice to those who need it. This implies that he used to be more outgoing before an unknown incident changed his personality.
Regardless, MR. OUTBACK seems to possess great knowledge about HEADSPACE, extending to knowing its existence during the beginning of time and how it constantly changes over time. This refers to the never-ending cycle it goes through every time it is reset to keep the truth hidden.
MR. OUTBACK also seems to be aware of the truth like a few other denizens before him, even mentioning a set of keys that appears whenever one tries to pursue the truth. He even encourages the group to continue their journey until reaching their goal.
STORY
PROLOGUE
MR. OUTBACK can be first encountered at the TRAIN STATION, shown standing in front of the line before acquiring the TRAIN PASS. When speaking to him, MR. OUTBACK will simply say howdy to the group.
THREE DAYS LEFT
MR. OUTBACK has departed to ORANGE OASIS like many other passengers using the TRAIN. He now shows up again in the landscape of ORANGE OASIS. However, as he is on a higher ledge, he is inaccessible at first. To reach him, OMORI and friends must progress through SWEETHEART'S CASTLE, where OMORI can learn how to slice open the mysterious bulbs in the GARDEN.
Defeat SWEETHEART to escape from her castle. OMORI and friends can now slice open the mysterious bulb to jump onto the ledge where MR. OUTBACK is to talk to him. When spoken to, MR. OUTBACK provides lore on ORANGE OASIS, tells OMORI and friends that BASIL is not there, and drops hints about the importance of KEYS. He expresses his encouragement for OMORI and friends at the end of his dialogue.
TWO DAYS LEFT

If the player has already completed LOST LIBRARY by jumping into the hole in SWEETHEART'S CASTLE, MR. OUTBACK can no longer be interacted with as he has been turned into a sand sculpture.
This is presumably due to him knowing too much about THE TRUTH and OMORI's true nature. Inspecting MR. OUTBACK will simply lead to the text mentioning his current status as a frozen sand sculpture. This also extends to ONE DAY LEFT of the OMORI ROUTE.

TRIVIA
- In one of the game's language files, MR. OUTBACK is referred to as Buckaroo.
- MR. OUTBACK's dialogue provides several hints about the truth behind HEADSPACE's existence:
- He is aware about other individuals who know more than they look. This is implied to be referring to self-aware denizens such as ABBI, the DEEPER WELL residents, and HUMPHREY.
- He reckons that HEADSPACE has been around since the beginning of time, and also mentions that it once looked different in the past. This implies that HEADSPACE might be more than just a imaginary world created by THE DREAMER.
- His comparison of OMORI's dark, destructive aura to his three other friends' warm-hearted demeanors heavily hints of OMORI's true nature and his connection to the truth.
