Mud newts are presumably amphibious animals that live underground in Ninjago. They are also a delicacy.
History
Home
After their monastery was burnt down by the Hypnobrai, the ninja were briefly forced to live outdoors. Not having any food, they were able to find mud newts which they roasted over a fire to eat.
Once Bitten, Twice Shy
When Jay revealed to be a snake in a restaurant at Mega Monster Amusement Park, several people attack him with their food, some consisting of roasted mud newts.
