The Blue Crystal is the crystal obtained in the Crystal Caves of Chen's Island. Chen's Staff of Elements had the blue crystal in the jaws of the skull.
When combined with Chronosteel, it can absorb an Elemental Masters of their Elemental Power and even drain/steal more than one elemental energy; only if partnered up with Chronosteel as seen with the Staff of Elements, as it allows Chronosteel to strip more than one power and store the powers in the Blue Crystal. The staff's crystal will be protected by the incredibly strong Chronosteel. Alternatively, Chronosteel gives the crystal the ability to take away the powers of others by blasting an already absorbed power on the target then the power color will be absorbed in the crystal.[1]
History
Prior to Tournament of Elements
At some point in time, caves of blue crystal formed on the island that Chen would be exiled to at the end of the Serpentine War.
After Chen's exile, he schemed to one day return to power by transforming himself and his cult following into an army of Anacondrai. To do so, they would require a multitude of elemental powers to complete a spell that would transform all bearing the mark of the Anacondrai into the titular tribe of snakes. In preparation for his sinister plans, Chen had a piece of blue crystal retrieved from the crystal caves, where it would be used to create the staff of elements.
Following the Nindroid crisis, Chen had the newly rebuilt Zane captured and brought to his island, where he tested out the properties of the blue crystal by draining the Master of Ice of his elemental powers. Satisfied with the results, Chen proceeded with the next step of his plan, sending out invitations to all Elemental Masters throughout Ninjago, promising them a tournament to showcase their command of their abilities and to battle for glory.
Tournament of Elements
Throughout the Tournament of Elements, Chen would secretly use his Staff of Elements to strip defeated Elemental Masters of their powers. The first of these was Karlof, Master of Metal, who was eliminated in the first game before the tournament's matches would begin. As the games progressed, Gravis, Bolobo, Ash, Cole, Jacob Pevsner, Chamille, and Tox would be added to the list of defeated challengers. However with each passing day, the remaining Elemental Masters became increasingly suspicious of Chen, forcing him to abandon all pretense of a tournament and simply hunt down the remaining Elemental Masters. Chen would succeed at capturing all of the remaining masters except for Lloyd in one fell swoop.
After draining all the remaining Elemental Masters except for Lloyd and his own daughter, Skylor, Chen awaited for the green ninja's arrival within his palace, challenging the green ninja in what he would call the "final match of the tournament." Throughout their fight, Chen would use the blue crystal within his staff to emulate all of the captured elemental powers, allowing him to easily defeat the green ninja. The following evening, Chen and his followers gathered within the underground Anacondrai Temple to celebrate Chen's victory and to transform them all into Anacondrai, declaring that tomorrow they would go forth and conquer Ninjago. As Chen laughed in celebration of his victory, Skylor and Kai, the latter having since joined forces with Chen, asked if they could stand beside the warlord, a request he giddily granted. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a ruse, and to Chen's surprise, Skylor betrayed him, knocking the staff from her father's hands and allowing for Kai to take possession of it. Although the red ninja became briefly corrupted by the power of the staff, he managed to regain his senses long enough to smash the staff upon the ground, shattering the crystal and releasing all elemental powers that had been stored within it back to their original owners.
The next morning, Chen and Clouse ruminated in their defeat. Although they had managed to evade being captured by the Elemental Masters the prior night, time was running out for them to escape the island. As the two conversed, Clouse suddenly realized that although the staff was destroyed, there was still another way of achieving Chen's desires. Clouse would explain to his master that since Skylor's power of Amber had intermingled with every other power held within the staff prior to its destruction, all they had to do now was to bring her to the crystal caves located on the island.
After a prolonged hunt, Chen and his dwindling forces managed to capture Skylor and Kai, bringing both of them to the island's crystal caves where the transformation spell was completed.
Abilities
- Elemental Power Absorption - The Blue Crystal can hold elemental powers and drain them from an elemental master. It can also harness and hold that energy as Chen used the Crystal Caves to drain Skylor of all her elemental powers she absorbed during the tournament and harness their energy to complete the spell.[2]

Trivia
- Red, blue, and green crystal pieces appear in 70749 Enter the Serpent, possibly representing Fire, Lightning or Ice, and Energy, respectively.
- Blue Crystal (in the Staff of Elements) and Chronosteel (in the Time Blades) appear to hold elemental power differently. Elemental powers are more distinct orbs inside the Blue Crystal, while the elemental energy appears to be evenly dispersed throughout Chronosteel.
- According to Tommy Andreasen, the crystal of the Djinn Blade is not Blue Crystal.[3] However, both types of crystal are similar, as they allow the users to steal others' Elemental Powers and use them as their own.
