When an Americancouple are shot dead while exploring an area in Iraq, the NCIS team re-examine an ambush on a group of Special Ops that occurred in the same area six months prior to the attack. During the main investigation, Gibbs discovers that he needs the account of the solo survivor of the attack who is being treated for PTSD at the Walter Reed Memorial Centre. Gibbs attempts to connect with the Marine, with the team soon discovering a potential suspect responsible for the killings, forcing Gibbs to go back to his roots as a sniper when new evidence suggests that the killer is about to strike again.

This episode features an appearance from the MusiCorps Wounded Warrior Band which is a real-life music rehabilitation program at Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre that helps severely wounded service members learn or relearn to play music with various wounded Marines having gone on to become musicians in their own rights.
Arthur Bloom who has a cameo in this episode is the founder of the MusiCorps.

The song Diggs sings and that the MusiCorps Wounded Warrior Band play is a cover version of "Hallelujah", a song originally performed by Canadian musician Leonard Cohen. American musician Jeff Buckley later performed his own version of the song and it later became a success. Buckley drowned on May 29, 1997 at the age of 30 while swimming in Wolf River, a tributary of the Mississippi. Since then, Buckley's version of "Hallelujah" which was released posthumously, has gained huge recognition and popularity.
