Picture Segment Description
SCENE 1 Bob wants to talk about the letter J. He has a capital J, but he puts it down for a minute to go get a small j. Meanwhile, Big Bird comes out of the garage with a fishing pole, looking for a hook. He sees the capital J and attaches it to his line. Bob returns with the small j, but leaves it for a minute to go looking for the capital J he left there. Big Bird comes back and puts that one on his line too. Bob comes back and asks Big Bird for help finding his Js, and finds them on Big Bird’s fishing line. After Bob explains the letter J, he tells Big Bird he won’t catch any fish with the letter J. Big Bird says he’ll go fishing for letters, instead. Bob doesn't think one can go fishing for letters...
Cartoon While fishing one day, a boy catches the letters of the alphabet. Frustrated at not having caught any fish to eat, he decides to use his catch for alphabet soup.

SCENE 2 Susan found the alligator in the previous cartoon frightening but Oscar the Grouch disagrees, saying it was cute. He tells Susan and the kids that he is not afraid of anything; not even an alligator, a lion, or a shaky bridge. He suddenly hears thunder and wants Susan to hold his paw.
Cartoon "The Story of A": A witch tells bored kids a story about the letter A involving an ant's apple getting stolen by an archer.

SCENE 3 Gordon displays some objects to Big Bird and the kids one at a time, and has them guess where to find the objects. They eventually conclude that a bottle of soda, a box of cookies, a bar of soap, and a shopping cart can all be found at the supermarket.
Film Kids narrate a film about helping pick out items at the supermarket, and using the shopping cart to have a race.
SCENE 4 Gordon and Susan show the kids what rhythm is, and invite them, along with the viewer, to clap along to some peanut butter and jelly making music.

SCENE 5 Oscar introduces the next segment by holding an ice cream cone (with a round scoop) and reciting a poem about how much he hates it.

Muppets Bob reads the story of "The Magic Apple," which is acted out by Ernie, Bert and three Anything Muppets. Ernie plays a "poor but honest farm boy" who would like to marry a princess and live in a palace with Rubber Duckies and banana milkshakes. A fairy godmother grants him that wish, but only if he can pick a magic apple from a tree. A farmer attempts to help him get the apple, but doesn't succeed. Finally, Ernie rests under the tree until the apple falls into his mouth! Just then, a king arrives and chooses Ernie to marry his daughter, "the lovely Princess Gwendolinda" (Bert in drag!).

SCENE 6 Big Bird stumbles into the kitchen and ruins Gordon's peanut butter and jelly making music groove. He shows off a card he found with a really big word — abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz — and sings "ABC-DEF-GHI." Gordon and Susan explain that it's really the alphabet, but Big Bird runs off to show Mr. Hooper his new word.
