Klingon D4 Class Bird-of-Prey

A patrol ship or patrol vessel was a small to mid-sized starship that was usually well armed, and typically found patrolling or policeing territorial boundaries.

In 2369, Tosk followed a small ship that he saw disappear through the Bajoran wormhole into the Alpha Quadrant. Upon his ship's arrival at Deep Space 9, Commander Benjamin Sisko explained that said vessel "was one of our patrol vessels." (DS9: "Captive Pursuit")

Sisko did not clarify if these patrol vessels were operated by the Bajoran Militia or Starfleet (i.e. a runabout).

Patrol ships by species

According to a deleted line from VOY: "Basics, Part II", the Talaxian ships that helped recapture USS Voyager were Talaxian patrol ships.
