Mino Magnus

"I won't... let... you... stop... Ragnarok! I am... the... great... Mino... Magnus! I... will... crush... you... and then... uhm..."
—Mino Magnus, Mega Man Zero 4

Mino Magnus, known as Mino Magnaxe (ミノ・マグナクス Mino Magunakusu) in Japan, is one of the Einherjar Eight Warriors in Mega Man Zero 4. He is a Mutos Reploid based on the Minotaur, and guards the Magnetic Zone meant to disrupt Area Zero's environmental control systems with electromagnetic pulses.

History

Mino Magnus previously worked as part of Mass Driver, a transportation unit. Due to his size and strength, he often faces the possibility of running out of energy. He seized the opportunity to join Dr. Weil's ranks at the promise of an unlimited supply of energy.

Mino Magnus first appears alongside the rest of the Einherjar, his slow speech resulting in Tech Kraken finishing his sentences twice.

Magnus faces Zero once he intrudes in the Magnetic Zone, stopping the EMPs from frying Area Zero's environmental control systems and the Resistance's trailer. Zero is impatient with his slowness and jumps right into the battle. If Magnus defeats Zero, he expresses surprised elation that he was able to do so by himself.

Once resurrected to fight Zero again in Ragnarok, Magnus tries to talk and is interrupted by Zero a second time. Before dying, he manages to somewhat form a sentence telling the legendary Reploid that Ragnarok will inevitably destroy Area Zero, before perishing for good.

Strategy

Mino Magnus uses an axe in battle, but he doesn't make use of it much. His magnetic abilities increase if the weather is set to his favor. If he is defeated in a stormy weather, Zero learns the EX Skill Tractor Shot.

Attack Description Notes
Magnetic Tractor Magnus creates a magnetic sphere on his shoulder and tries to pull Zero in with it. There are two versions of them: pink (North) and blue (South). The pink one is stronger than the blue one.
Separation Magnus goes into the middle of the screen and separates his body into five parts, attacking Zero with a rather complex pattern of movements. Dodging this attack looks difficult, but the pattern is always the same, allowing the player to memorize the pattern and give them the opportunity attack Magnus' vulnerable torso.
Grab and Slam Magnus dashes towards Zero, grabs him and gives him a magnetic charge, then throws him into a wall with an identical charge from his shoulder. The magnetic charge lasts for a long time and attracts bits of debris to Zero while he is touching the ground, greatly hindering his movements until shaken off.
Magnetic Tackle Magnus pushes Zero to the wall. Only used if Zero is charged with magnetism.
Magnetic Beam Magnus creates a green (magnetic) sphere. The sphere hovers above Zero and pulls debris out of the ground beneath it, eventually forming a large block that drops to the ground. Magnus jumps and chops the debris block in half, sending blocks of debris across the floor and into the walls where they shatter into more debris.
EX Skill:
Magnetic Slugger
(マグネティックスラッガー)
Magnus creates a green (magnetic) sphere. The sphere is released to the side of the arena opposite Magnus and returns to him while quickly gathering debris, eventually forming a large block. Magnus then swings his axe at the debris block, sending two blocks of them flying and shattering on impact into showers of debris.

He once worked as part of Mass Driver, a mass transportation unit. He seized the opportunity to join Weil's ranks at the promise of limitless energy. He can generate high amounts of power, but expends an equivalent amount of energy to do so. He is a slow talker, and being interrupted during conversations is one of his pet peeves.

Different designs for Mino Magnus were proposed, with different horns or with hands that seem to be combined with his axe.

Yamato Man

Mino Magnaxe appeared in the Rockman Zero manga, where he fights against the new Zero.

Irritated at Kraft's defiance in his mission to eliminate Zero, Dr. Vile sends out Magnaxe to finish Kraft's mission instead. While Magnaxe seems to gain the upper hand, Kraft regains his consciousness and destroys Magnaxe with his cannon, calling him an obstacle in his way, as his fight with Zero wasn't over yet.

Etymology

  • Mino Magnus' first name is derived from the Minotaur, while his second name is based on both the Greek word "magnet" and the Greek name "Magnus" meaning "the great".

Trivia

  • Mino Magnus is the only Mutos Reploid with pre-battle dialogue where Zero speaks a line, interrupting his slow boast.
  • Mino Magnus' weapon of choice, an axe, is likely inspired by the Minoan symbol of the labrys. By extension, this concept is often related to the mythological minotaur upon which Magnus is based.
