Farming, or grinding, is a term in video games used when players collect something over and over with the intent to amass it. An example include item farming, a term used mainly in role playing games when a player fights an enemy over and over to collect the items that can be obtained from them, such as Battle Chips and Battle Cards in the Mega Man Battle Network and Mega Man Star Force series, respectively.

In early games, item farming is done to collect Life Energy or Weapon Energy to refill the player's energy and the energy from Special Weapons before proceeding. In later games it is also done to refill Sub Tanks.

Players may also farm 1-UPs to have more chances to complete a stage that they consider difficult to pass. With the inclusion of the ability to escape from stages, it became easier to collect 1-UPs as the player does not require to travel the whole stage to obtain a specific 1-UP. If the player is focused on other items, such as currency (P Chips, Screws, Energy Crystals, etc.), and escape is not available, the player may collect an item, lose extra lives, and continue to collect the item again.

In some games, like Mega Man Zero, 1-UP farming isn't very effective due to requiring more skill, being more effective to load and try again and keep as many as possible to the desired mission. In games with a shop, it is better to farm the game's currency to purchase 1UPs.

Game Example
Mega Man
Mega Man 2 In areas where the enemies Telly or Pipi spawn, Leaf Shield can be used to wait for them to approach the player and let them defeat themselves.
Mega Man 3 In sections of Gemini Man's stage containing multiple Pole eggs that can be blasted with the Mega Buster. These sections are also close to ladders, so every egg will respawn if the player leaves and returns to the area.
Mega Man 4
Mega Man 5
Mega Man 6
Mega Man 7 In Slash Man's stage, which features trees with Derusu Bee hives. Shooting a hive will cause more bees to appear for the player to defeat in quick succession. However, too many bees at once can be dangerous. The hives can respawn by moving far enough away, but they will not respawn if the tree is destroyed by use of the Scorch Wheel weapon.
Mega Man 8
Mega Man 9 In Plug Man's stage and the first stage of Wily Castle, each containing sets of pipes that can repeatedly spawn groups of Telly enemies. Using the Jewel Satellite weapon can instantly defeat an infinite amount of them with one use of the shield.
Mega Man 10
Mega Man 11 Early in the game, the player can take the large screw near the beginning of Block Man's stage, leave the stage, and repeat to collect as many as necessary.

After defeating Yellow Devil MK-III, the second Gear Fortress has a room with a conveyor belt, Shimobey, and Lyrics that can be used to amass a large amount of items. Simply defeat the Shimobeys that appear to explode the Lyrics, and the conveyor belt will carry most items to Mega Man. It is recommended to buy and equip the Bolt Catcher (or other desired item) to increase the amount obtained.

Mega Man V
Mega Man: The Wily Wars
(Wily Tower mode)
Mega Man Powered Up 1UPs are easier to collect in Ice Man's stage. With Mega Man or Oil Man, use Oil Slider to get the 1UP above the water and leave the stage. Repeat until the limit is reached.
Mega Man X With the Arm Parts, use a charged Rolling Shield in an area with many enemies and keep destroying them. An example is the Batton Bones in Armored Armadillo's stage

The Batton M-501 present early in Armored Armadillo's stage always drops a 1-UP. After defeating it, walk a bit and return to its location to make it respawn.

Additionally, in the fourth Sigma Stage, it's possible to use the Creepers that emerge from the walls to farm the Life Energy items they drop to fill up X's Sub Tanks before facing Sigma.

Mega Man X2 In Bubble Crab's stage, after encountering Sea Canthller, go down the opening and check the left wall to find a hidden room. Using a charged Silk Shot in the area will generate Life Energy items.
Mega Man X3 Crush Crawfish's stage has a good amount of Life Energy items and two extra lives near a checkpoint and spikes, although the extra lives require Tornado Fang to be obtained. After obtaining the Hyper Chip, X can refill his life and Sub Tanks by simply standing still for some time.
Mega Man X4
Mega Man X5
Mega Man X6
Mega Man X7
Mega Man X8 Yellow Brontes is the best source for Metals. While it is escaping, continuously use Axl Bullets or Ray Gun to make it drop Metals. After Yellow Brontes enters the building, lose a life on the nearby spikes to repeat the chase and gather more Metals. It is possible to gather between 3000-5000 Metals per chase. The Metal Generator found in Troia Base will speed up the farming.

Alternatively, when Yellow Brontes is chasing the Hunters, stay in the entrance of the area with the Light Capsule, where the beam attack can't reach, and with Axl, use something (anything goes, but use common sense and avoid things that may damage the controller/keyboard) to hold the attack button. While this method is slower, it can be done automatically.

Mega Man Xtreme
Mega Man Xtreme 2
Mega Man X: Command Mission The Gimialla Mine has several enemies that can be used for farming, with Fire Globs granting more exp, Plasma Globs more FME, and the Gold Mettaurs and Silver Mettaurs more Zenny.
Mega Man Zero In the Underground Laboratory, defeat several Hoppiders for Life Energy, Energy Crystals, and weapon experience. This can only be done before completing Maha Ganeshariff's mission.
Mega Man Zero 2
Mega Man Zero 3
Mega Man Zero 4
Mega Man ZX
Mega Man ZX Advent Tower of Verdure 1 and Oil Field 3.

For 1UP Items, teleport to Oil Field 2 and use Buckfire's Rockit (or other form after progressing in the game) to get the item.

Mega Man Legends The enemy Miroc drops the highest amount of the Zenny.
Mega Man Legends 2 The enemy King Miroc drops the highest amount of the Zenny. Engurpots is also a good source of Zenny.
