Epsilon

"I will not run from this fight. For I know that this bridge must be crossed to achieve our ideal. They will tremble before the power of Epsilon!"
―Epsilon, Mega Man X: Command Mission

Epsilon, known as Ypsilon (イプシロン Ipushiron) in Japan, is a central antagonist in Mega Man X: Command Mission. He is the leader of the Rebellion Army, and acts as the game's main antagonist up until the Final Chapter.

Characteristics

Epsilon is a huge Reploid, standing taller and broader than any of his Cadre. He has dark skin and eyes, and wears black and red armor. His helmet and shoulderpads have several rods protruding out of them, and he has an orange visor that covers his eyes. He normally wears a tattered black cloak, which covers most of his body and makes the mess of wires on his back resemble wings. Upon putting his Supra-Force Metal into overdrive, the rods on his shoulderpads are ejected.

Epsilon is a well-intentioned extremist who truly believes that what he's doing is right and does not see himself as a villain. A proud and noble individual, Epsilon is often seen standing silently, his stoic nature creating a strong presence. He is deeply respected by his followers due to his ambition, wisdom, and poise. Epsilon was lucky enough to survive the Supra-Force Metal experiments of his past, and now desires to empower other Reploids as well. He believes that Reploids can evolve past what humans have made them to be, and he will do whatever it takes to make others understand his ideal as well. This goal of Reploid evolution is similar to Sigma and Colonel Redips - however, Epsilon does not share Sigma's genocidal aggression against humans nor Redips' excessive megalomania or narcissism.

History

Background

Epsilon was one of many Reploids created in Force Metal experiments in the Lagrano Ruins, designated as the "Unknown Energy Manipulator: Test Model". Epsilon was the most successful Reploid to come out of the Supra-Force Metal experiments, gaining heightened intelligence and strength, where it drove many other subjects mad or killed them outright.

Fascinated by the evolutionary potential of Force Metal, Epsilon planned an uprising to make Giga City an independent state where Reploids could freely experiment with Force Metal. The cables attached to his back are remnants of experiments, which he tore himself out of when he began his fight for independence.[1] He recruited many powerful Reploids to his cause, including a Cadre composed of his fellow test subject Scarface, the security officer Ferham, and the ambitious Botos. Epsilon and his Rebellion Army executed a coup d'état and banished all humans from the island without harm, demanding the Federation recognize Giga City as an independent Reploid state.

Mega Man X: Command Mission

After Epsilon's Rebellion Army proved resilient, the Federation deployed the Maverick Hunters X, Zero, and Shadow to Giga City. However, Epsilon had already turned Shadow to his side before the mission, getting him to lead X and Zero into an ambush with the rest of the Cadre. Epsilon tries to convince the two Hunters to join his cause too, but they both refuse and escape, albeit separated. Although Ferham wants to give pursuit, Epsilon orders her to stand down.

Throughout the rest of the game, Epsilon makes attempts to control Giga City's resources while crushing the Resistance that opposes him. Realizing he needs force to make others listen to his ideals, he resorts to creating a missile armed with Supra-Force Metal to keep his foes at bay. He directly orders his cadres to carry out these missions on multiple occasions.

Eventually, X and his team trace Scarface's location, leading them to Epsilon's hideout in the Grave Ruins Base. Epsilon is prepared to fight them, but Scarface takes his place, urging him to flee. After Scarface falls in his name, Epsilon refuses to run away and takes them on himself, only to lose. He then states that his options for achieving his goal were very limited, due to his group being labeled Mavericks so quickly. As he tries to continue fighting, X brings him down with his buster.

After the end of the game, Epsilon was deferred of all Maverick charges posthumously, most likely due to the restraint he showed in not killing innocents (having banished the humans from Giga City without harm, simply forbidding them to return), and the fact that his Maverick status came about as a result of the traitorous Redips' command.

Powers and abilities

Epsilon is an incredibly powerful Reploid thanks to the Supra-Force Metal stored in his body. He has no elemental alignment, but can use all three elemental attacks. His hands glow with blue energy when the Force Metal is active, powering up his hand-to-hand strikes and projecting tractor beams in Metacrush. His Nova Impact fires an explosive sphere of white energy. Upon putting his internal Supra-Force Metal into overdrive, the rods on his shoulderpads are ejected; this form is called Eject Epsilon. This heals him by half of his current Life Energy every turn.

Etymology

MMXCM RebellionArmyLogo
  • His Japanese name, イプシロン, is actually the Greek alphabet "Υ / υ" (ypsilon) as pronounced in Modern Greek and some other languages. Perhaps not coincidentally, the symbol of the Rebellion Army looks like "Υ", the capital letter ypsilon, in the shape of an eagle with its wings spread. Therefore, it is possible that this character was not intended to be named after the letter "Ε / ɛ" (epsilon) after all.

Trivia

  • Epsilon shares many similarities with Sigma in Mega Man X8. Both have names based on letters of the Greek alphabet, both seek to hasten Reploid evolution, both are decoy final bosses, and both have voices provided by Dave Pettitt.
  • Epsilon's visor inexplicably disappears from his helmet when he enters his battle model and removes his cloak. The visor is also absent from his official art.
