The Seedlusa is a dangerous enemy from Mario & Luigi: Brothership. They are exclusively encountered in the Soli-Tree.
Description
Seedlusas have a design resembling the Seedle's, but their body is monochrome and their eyes are red, making them resemble Reclusa to a degree, and their "leaves" look like cords. Since they move away from the Bros. when approached in the field, and have a high chance of fleeing in combat, Seedlusas seem to be cowardly. However, when summoned as part of Reclusa's mob at the top of the Soli-Tree, the creatures appear surprisingly brave in cutscenes, although their behaviour is unchanged in combat.
Behaviour
In the field, Seedlusas hop away from the Bros. when approached. As such, they are one of the few enemies that are unlikely to land a first strike upon making contact; ironically, should they be approached, they are actually more vulnerable to a first strike than most enemies, since they give their pursuers more of a window to hit them before colliding.
Combat
Unlike the regular Seedle, Seedlusas face away from their opposition. A Seedlusa's extremely high defense allows them to take very little damage from attacks, so attacks that hit multiple times are highly recommended against these aberrations. In combat, it rarely attacks, and has a high chance of running away. If it is the only Seedlusa left, it will bury itself into the ground to transform into a flower monster.
The Seedlusa is a Level 43 monster with 32 hit points, an attack power of 231, a defense of 1746, and a speed of 289. When slain, it gives 490 Experience and 69 Coins.
A Seedlusa can be accompanied by Weeping Troopers and/or Reclusiffs.
At the top of the Soli-Tree, Mario and Luigi must battle two waves each of four Seedlusas, the second of which is aided by a single Reclusiff. Afterwards, a cutscene plays where the Bros. get overwhelmed before Bowser blasts Reclusa's minions in his revenge quest against Zokket (who is dead) as it orders its army to attack, enraging it.
Behind the Scenes
Etymology
The Seedlusa's name comes from the name of Reclusa (who hired them as guards in the Soli-Tree) mixed with either "seed" or "Seedle" (due to their resemblance to one).
Nomenclature
Translations of the Seedlusa's name involve the regular Seedle's name or just the word "seed" translated into the same language being combined Reclusa's name:
- Japanese: Tanebotchi -- Written タネボッチ. Portmanteau of tane ("seed"; written 種) and the first two syllables of Reclusa's Japanese name, Botchiāni.
- Chinese: Zhǒngzi Dúgū -- Written 种子独孤. Zhǒngzi (written 种子) means "seed," while Dúgū (written 独孤) comes from Reclusa's Chinese name, Dúgū Yàní (written 独孤亚霓).
- Spanish: Ysolmilla -- portmanteau of semilla ("seed") and the first two syllables of Reclusa's Spanish name, Ysoleth.
- Portuguese: Reklusina -- from Reclusa's Portuguese name Rekluso. The final -ina is a feminine diminutive suffix that was probably derived from Sementina (the regular Seedle's Portuguese name)
- Italian: Ysolpiantagránia -- from Reclusa's Italian name Ysoll and the regular Seedle's Italian name Piantagránia.
- French: Solibolb (from solitaire (referencing their master's solitude theme) and bulbe ("bulb," since they resemble regular Seedles, which are called "Bulbet"))
- Korean: Ssias'tori -- Written 씨앗토리. from ssias ("seed"; written 씨앗) and the second and third syllables of Reclusa's Korean name, Oetorikeu (written 외토리크).
Trivia
- The Seedlusa has the highest Speed stat out of all non-boss enemies in the entire game.
