Captain Greenbeard is a character from the Donkey Kong franchise, first seen in Donkey Kong Country Returns. He is the leader of the Scurvy Crew, a pirate crew of crabs, and is encountered as the boss of World 2, which takes place on a beach.
Profile
Physical description
Captain Greenbeard himself is a red crab who has a green beard, hence his name. His attire consists of a blue pirate captain's hat. One of his claws is missing, being replaced by a fork.
Captain Greenbeard's cohorts are also crabs, with their left claws missing. One is blue and has a sword, while the other is yellow and has a fork.
Personality traits
While not much is known about his personality, Greenbeard seems to like bananas. However, when the Maraca Tikis brainwash him and his crew, the three crabs show hostility towards Donkey Kong for encroaching upon their territory. However, in their Super Smash Bros. 4 trophy, Greenbeard and his crew are said to have been grouchy already.
History
In Donkey Kong Country Returns
Unlike most bosses, and like the Mangoruby, Greenbeard and his crew can be seen in a prior level. Greenbeard and his yellow cohort fire some bombs at Donkey Kong to knock him off a Rocket Barrel. Late in the level, he tries to smash Donkey Kong with a large anchor, but if Donkey Kong dodges it, the anchor catches on a rock, crashing the ship that the pirates were using. The blue crab is not seen here, implying that it was below deck.
During his actual fight, the captain does not attack immediately. At the very start of the fight, Greenbeard and his cohorts bury their bodies in sand. One of the pirates surfaces and begins patrolling the arena left and right, occasionally sticking its claws up. Donkey Kong must stomp on the pirate's head when it has its claws down. This done, Donkey Kong must use his Ground Pound skill, causing the crab to flip upside-down. He can then stomp on its rear to deal damage, causing the other one to appear. After both pirates are dealt with this way, Greenbeard will surface and begin performing the same action as his minions, and must be dealt with the same way. When that is done, the three crabs stack up and march towards Donkey Kong as a tower, occasionally sticking their claws up. Donkey Kong must flip over the tower with his roll skill when the crabs stick up their claws, then stomp on the crabs' exposed butts to move on. The second half of the fight largely matches, though the crabs stick up their claws more often, with less time as a group.
Upon defeat, Greenbeard's minions resurface and then collapse. Greenbeard himself gets on top of their bodies, shaking his right claw, which is balled up into a fist. Afterwards, he collapses.
In Super Smash Bros. 4
Greenbeard and his minions make a cameo appearance in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. 4 as a collectible trophy labelled "Scurvy Crew." The description for their trophy reads: "Pirates...who are also crabs... Let's just sidestep that whole issue. These guys have been hypnotised by the Tiki Tak Tribe and are filled with rage! Having said that, considering they have a sword, a fork and a hook instead of left pincers, maybe they were pretty crabby to begin with." [1]
Trivia
- Captain Greenbeard is the only boss from Donkey Kong Country Returns to have a trophy in Super Smash Bros. 4 but not be referred to by name. He is also the only one to be seen in a prior level to their boss fight. In Peaceful Pier, Captain Greenbeard orders his minions to bombard Donkey Kong with bombs.
- Originally, Captain Greenbeard and his crew were going to have trousers, but this was changed in the final game so they appear naked, although Captain Greenbeard still has his hat.
- The Scurvy Crew trophy's description references how crabs walk sideways in the first sentence: "Pirates... who are also crabs... let's just sidestep that whole issue."
