Jelarkan [jel-R-can][1] was the 22-year-old Prince of Capustan.[2][3] He ruled his city in a coalition with the Mask Council and was commander of the Capanthall, the city's garrison.[4]
Jelarkan's lined, drawn face could have belonged to a man of forty. His shaved pate revealed a "scatter of moles that marked his royal line, as if he had been sprayed in blood that had since dried and grown dark".[3] He had elegant, long-fingered hands[5] and brown eyes.[3]
He wore a belted robe and a circlet of cold-hammered copper as his crown.[5][3]
In Memories of Ice
In the face of the Pannion Domin invasion, Jelarkan hired the Grey Swords, a religious mercenary group from Elingarth who worshipped Fener. This allowed him to circumvent the city law that prohibited him from increasing his complement of Capanthall any higher than two thousand. The addition of the Grey Swords gave him a force over ten thousand strong.[4][6] Jelarkan significantly drained the city treasury purchasing bows, arrows, ballistae, mangonels, and other weapons of slaughter[7] while also strengthening the city's walls.[8]
Much to his dismay, the Grey Swords operated independently of his supervision, deciding on their own strategy and making secret alliances with the armies of the Malazan High Fist Dujek Onearm, Caladan Brood, and the Kron T'lan Imass.[9] When seeking audience with Brukhalian he was told the Mortal Sword in his employ had no time for him.[5]
After the city's walls were breached during the Siege of Capustan, Jelarkan's Palace fell to Anaster and his Tenescowri. Grey Sword Shield Anvil Itkovian retook the palace only to discover Jelarkan had been killed, skinned, and partially eaten by the Tenescowri.[10] Itkovian ordered the prince's skin to be sewn back on and the corpse placed back upon his throne.[11] The Mask Council coronated Prince Arard of Coral as his successor.[12]
