Blue

"Blue" is the seventh track of Madison Beer's debut studio album, Life Support. It was released on February 26, 2021 through Epic Records.

Background

On December 18, 2018, Madison initially teased the track on a Instagram Livestream.[1] Beer stated: "(…) I have a really sick video planned for [Emotinal Bruises] and for another one called “Blue”, but I literally can’t allow myself to play it for you."

Beer hinted at the song again on May 28, 2019 by tweeting"you could be as sweet as honey but i knew the darkness in your mind". [2] A day later she teased more lyrics "i was always blue behind the red blood stain on my lips".[3]

She later previewed a 1-minute-long snippet on June 1, 2019 at Wango Tango and told everyone there that June 14 would be the expected release date for it.[4] This ended up not happening, Madison went to say: "Blue is taking a bit longer than we expected, isn’t it? It’s not my fault though, I promise. I’m trying so hard to make Blue happen but there’s a lot that goes into, a lot."

When a fan asked Madison to share her thoughts about Blue on June 5, 2019, she replied that she was still finishing up the visuals and that it didn't yet fully convey and implement her ideas.[5]

A few dates later, on June 16, 2019 she showed the same 1-minute-long snippet and said the song would be out in two weeks, which would mean June 30, 2019.[6]

"I’ll play you guys “Blue” since I’m being ridiculous for not putting it out because I’m just… I’m scared (…) It will be out soon, within the next… I wanna say the next two weeks, I’m sorry that it’s been more than what I said but I’m excited"

After a lengthy silence, Madison finally acknowledged the song's continued inclusion on the album on January 30, 2020, in response to a fan's question.[7] Later, on February 11, 2021, she posted an official teaser on Twitter and Instagram.[8]

Ultimately, Blue was not released as a single; rather, it was made available as a standard track on Beer's February 26, 2021 release of her debut studio album.

On November 8, 2021 as a result of the Dropbox Hack the second and fifth demo leaked along with an interlude.

Official versions

  • Final - 3:49
  • Demo 2 - 3:51
  • Demo 5 - 3:31
  • Interlude - 0:17

Trivia

  • "Blue" and "Emotional Bruises" are the oldest songs.[9]
    • The song was the third track on an earlier final tracklist that was leaked via Leroy Clampitt's Instagram stories on October 14, 2020.
  • It is the longest song on the album.
  • This song was intended to be a single along with "Emotional Bruises", but it was cut. This is likely because it didn't fully implement Madison's ideas.
  • It was part of the Life Support Tour, Life Support in Concert and at Wango Tango on June 1, 2019.
  • The song's demo version 5 features a different instrumental during the choruses but no changes to the lyrics.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I was always blue behind the
Red-blood stain on my lips
You were always green with envy
Saw right through the tenderness
We were like a California sunset
Fated to die any minute
Gettin' rid of you might be the best thing I ever did

[Pre-Chorus]
And I was seein' us in a silent movie
Takin' off our clothes like a violent crime scene
Diamonds in the cut always know how to fool me
Oh, honey

[Chorus]
But I know when to run, run, run
I know when to run, run, run
I know when to run, run, run
When my makeup does, when my makeup does
And I know when to run, run, run
I know when to run, run
And I know when to run, run, run
When my makeup does, when my makeup does

[Verse 2]
I was always blue behind the
Black mascara that I cry
You could be as sweet as honey
But I knew the darkness in your mind
We were like a gorgeous bed of roses
Ready to die any minute
Gettin' rid of you might be the best thing I ever did

[Pre-Chorus]
And I was seein' us in a silent movie
Takin' off our clothes like a violent crime scene
Diamonds in the cut always know how to fool me
Oh, honey

[Chorus]
But I know when to run, run, run
I know when to run, run, run
I know when to run, run, run
When my makeup does, when my makeup does
And I know when to run, run, run
I know when to run, run
And I know when to run, run, run
When my makeup does, when my makeup does

[Bridge]
Oh-oh, oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh, oh
Oh-oh, oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh, oh

[Chorus]
And I know when to run, run, run
I know when to run, run, run
I know when to run, run
When my makeup does, when my makeup does

[Outro]
(Run, run, run)
(Run, run, run)
(Run, run, run)
