Letter 247

This page concerns the real world.

A letter written to a Colonel Worskett by J.R.R. Tolkien is counted as Letter 247 in the publication The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Summary

Tolkien expressed his hope of soon returning to work at finishing certain works set in Middle-earth, and his fear that it would take some time to finish. He then related his belief that part of the attraction of Middle-earth is that certain details and information are kept mysterious, and only hinted at lest the magic be ruined. Earlier versions of the legendarium were quite different from the latest version, notably by the absence of characters such as hobbits and ents.
