Letter 187

Letter 187, in the ordering of The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, was written by J.R.R. Tolkien in 1956 to H. Cotton Minchin, an enthusiastic reader of The Lord of the Rings, which had been released two years prior.

Only a portion of the letter was published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.^[1]

Summary

Tolkien expresses delight at Minchin and other readers' curiosities for deeper details of Middle-earth. He discusses the Appendices, the evolution of the maps given in The Lord of the Rings publication, his astonishment at the books' success, and his idea for a follow-up "specialist volume" to the trilogy. Tolkien also expresses interest in the roots of Cotton Minchin's own name.
