One Good Turn is a magazine story inspired by The Lion King. It was published in two issues of The Lion King: A Nature Fun and Learn Series as part of the Hakuna Matata magazine series.
Synopsis
Part 1
When Timon has nothing to do, he tries to wake up Simba and Pumbaa, who are both in deep slumber. Since both his friends are too busy sleeping, Timon decides to go on his own. Not long into his adventure, some vultures try to eat him, but he comes out of the ordeal alive. After the vulture chase, Timon goes to get some grubs under a log. After he eats his bug sandwich, he sets off alone again. This time, he encounters a hyena. He can hear the hyena from afar and suddenly wants to go back to his two sleeping friends.
Meanwhile, Simba has woken up. He thinks of the wildebeests that caused his father's death and yells, accidentally waking Pumbaa, who falls back into sleep. Simba then hears a familiar voice, which he starts to follow. He soon realizes that Timon is surrounded by hungry hyenas who want to eat him. Panicked, Simba runs to his friend's rescue.
As Timon cries and pleas for the hyenas not to eat him, the hyenas laugh maniacally. As Simba catches sight of the hyenas, he remembers when he and his friend Nala had visited the Elephant Graveyard. Fueled by the memory of his terror, he attacks the hyenas and saves Timon. All this time, Pumbaa has remained asleep. When Simba and Timon come back to him, they tell Pumbaa the whole story.
Part 2
The next morning, Timon is the first to wake up and starts to prepare breakfast. Pumbaa and Simba wake up next, with Timon still praising Simba for his actions against the hyenas. A bit perturbed, Simba refuses to talk about it anymore and changes the subject.
After breakfast, Timon and Pumbaa decide to go to the river. Simba follows, even though he doesn't know how to swim. As they reach the river, Simba falls with a splash into the raging rapids. His buddies attempt to save him, with Timon remembering that there is a waterfall at the end of the river. The two throw a vine to him, and though it seems to work at first, Simba's paw slips. During their second attempt, the vine wraps around Simba's paw, and Simba is saved. After the rescue, Simba tells Timon that his life debt is now paid.
