Hamu is a male zebra. He is a member of Muhimu's herd.
Hamu was born to Muhimu while his herd was en route to Mbali Fields. Shortly after his birth, Hamu brayed loudly, which attracted Janja and his cronies, Cheezi and Chungu. The hyenas attacked, but Hamu was protected by his herd, Swala's herd, Kion, and Bunga. During the attack, Hamu kicked Janja in the face, which caused the hyenas to retreat.
As a foal, Hamu and several other young Pride Landers were babysat by Bunga, who taught them how to defend themselves. Reirei and her pack took advantage of the situation by attacking Bunga and his charges, but because of their self-defense training, they were able to successfully fend off the predators. This pleased their parents, who praised Bunga for his babysitting abilities.
Biography
Early life
During her herd's migration to Mbali Fields, Muhimu went into labor, and Kion was forced to make a difficult choice. While he sent Beshte, Fuli, and Ono ahead to keep leading the herds, he and Bunga stayed behind to help Muhimu give birth.
Under the careful watch of Swala and several others, Muhimu gave birth to Hamu. No sooner had the zebra foal been born when he emitted a loud bray, which attracted the attention of Janja and his minions, Cheezi and Chungu. The three plunged down the ridge in the hopes of scattering the gazelles and zebras, but Kion ordered them to protect Muhimu and her foal while he and Bunga took on the hyenas.
Together, Bunga and Kion distracted Cheezi and Chungu, but Janja managed to break through their defense to attack the zebras. However, he was kicked in the face by Hamu, and the hyenas scrambled to get away, having been bested by the herds' teamwork. With the hyenas defeated, the Lion Guard led the rest of the gazelles and zebras home, where Bunga played with Hamu.[1]

Reirei and her family plotted to attack Muhimu's herd. Nearby, Kion picked up the pack's scent, and the Lion Guard rushed to rescue the zebras from their attackers.

Before the Lion Guard could arrive, the pack struck, and Reirei's children, Dogo and Kijana, managed to isolate Hamu from the rest of the herd. Ono spotted the double attack, and Kion ordered Bunga and Ono to save Hamu while he, Beshte, and Fuli rescued the remainder of the herd.
Meanwhile, Kijana hid in the brush while Dogo tricked Hamu into stopping for a game of tag. Just in time, Ono warned Hamu of the trap, and Bunga tackled Kijana to the ground. Dogo made a last attempt on Hamu's life, but Bunga yelled at Hamu to kick Dogo, and the foal followed through on Bunga's advice, successfully fending off Dogo.

With the danger abated, Muhimu begged the Lion Guard to stay and watch over the herd. Beshte suggested that she take some time to herself, but Muhimu reminded him that she had Hamu to attend to. Just then, she noticed Bunga playing with Hamu and suggested that he take care of her son for the day. Bunga agreed to the task, much to Muhimu's relief.
At Hakuna Matata Falls, Twiga and several other Pride Lander parents approached Bunga and asked him to watch their children. Bunga agreed, and Hamu and the children gathered around him excitedly. As the young animals looked on, Bunga taught the children to "teke/kick," "ruka/jump," and "teleza/slide."

Just then, the jackals attacked, with Reirei taking on Bunga while her pups attacked the young animals. In the midst of the fight, Bunga yelled encouragement to Hamu and the other young animals, reminding them to "teke," "ruka," and "teleza" in order to fend off the jackals. The plan worked, and the jackals were defeated.
After the jackals departed, the children's parents returned, and Bunga explained to them how their children had bravely fended off Reirei's pack. The parents were shocked that Bunga had taught their children how to defend themselves, and Muhimu praised him for being the best babysitter ever. Hamu and the other youngsters then gathered around Bunga in a hug.[2]
Saved by Ono
Hamu and his herd were circled by a flock of vultures until they were led to safety by Ono.[3]
Physical appearance
As an infant, Hamu was small and skinny, with a slight build, thin legs, and a short mane. His eyes were sky blue.[1] As a foal, Hamu is larger, taller, and sturdier, and his eyes have darkened to cobalt blue. His coat is striped with black and white, and he has a black marking that runs between his eyes and ends just above his muzzle. While his ear tips, hooves, nose, and tail tip are black, his mane is black and white and ends in several strands of black hair over his forehead.[2]
