015B

015B (공일오비) is a male producer duo under their own label THE015B. Originally as a four-member band, they debuted on July 15, 1990 with their first album 015B.

Following the release of their sixth album, The Sixth Sense - Farewell to the World, 015B disbanded to focus on solo activities in 1996. However in 2006, 015B reformed as a duo consisting of the two brothers. Additionally, since 2018, they founded their own agency THE015B and currently focus on working as producers creating songs for aspiring singers and bands with their music projects New Edition and The Legacy.

History

1990–1996: Debut and rise to stardom

015B debuted in 1990 as a four-member band with members Jang Ho Il, Jung Suk Won, Cho Hyung Gon and Cho Hyun Chan. They released their first studio album 015B on July 15, 1990. They subsequently released yearly studio albums until 1994 with Second Episode released on July 22, 1991, The Third Wave on August 24, 1992, The Fourth Movement on August 25, 1993, and the Big 5 on November 20, 1994.

Of their first five studio albums, The Third Wave and The Fourth Movement became million-sellers, and songs such as "Very Old Lovers" and "New Humanity's Love" took first places on South Korean music ranking programs and swept year-end music award ceremonies, making them one of the most notable South Korean artists within the 1990s.

During this time, they also had more minor releases: their first live album 015B Løive released in 1991; a gospel album Gospel Hymn to Him released in 1993, and their second live album Strikes Back released in 1994.

Their sixth studio album, The Sixth Sense - Farewell to the World, was an end-of-the-century concept album that was released on May 23, 1996 after their agency moved from Daeyoung A&V to LG Media, which effectively dissolved the agency. Ahead of the release, 015B revealed that this would be their last album. The subtitle, Farewell to the World, can be interpreted as a dystopian view of the end of the century, but it can also be seen as a farewell to 015B's fans as they try to end their musical career. This album was also the most experimental of 015B's releases which ultimately led to poor sales (240,000 copies sold), but it was critically acclaimed for its quality.

LG Media released their sole best album, 015B The Best Collection, at the same time as The Sixth Sense - Farewell to the World. This was done without any discussion with the members or their permission, hence they do not acknowledge the release.

Members Cho Hyung Gon and Cho Hyun Chan went their own ways, while brothers Jang Ho Il and Jung Suk Won stayed together to work in music production.

2001: Publishing for another artist

In 2001, Jang Ho Il and Jung Suk Won discovered new singer Lee Ga Hee and released Lee Ga Hee's first album - the self-titled debut and sole studio album Lee Ga Hee. Lee Ga Hee was found through an audition held by 015B and they were the executive producers of the whole album. This was 015B's first musical work in 5 years and the first time they produced music to be published by another artist. Compared to other albums from the same age, the album dealt with concepts that were not considered age-appropriate for teenagers and too dark; many of the songs were banned from broadcasting due to the lyrics that were so honest about the emotions of teenagers and the use of vulgar language. Thus, it rarely appeared on broadcasts and ultimately it also ended Lee Ga Hee's very brief career as a singer.
