Hu Lie (onyomi: Ko Retsu) is a subordinate of Zhong Hui during the campaign against Shu. After Shu was conquered, Hu Lie initially complied with Zhong Hui's intention to rebel. When Jiang Wei attempted to kill Hu and the rest of the Wei generals, Hu immediately sent someone to inform his son, Hu Yuan.

Hu Yuan's army would later be credited for killing Zhong Hui and crushing Jiang Wei's rebellion.

Role in Games

Hu Lie recurrently appears as one of Wei's officers in Jin's story mode in Dynasty Warriors 7. In Deng Ai and Wang Yuanji's final conquest mode battles, Hu Lie will be among Zhong Hui's supporters. During Zhong Hui's rebellion during the Xtreme Legends expansion, Hu Lie and Hu Yuan will surrender when approached after killing Jiang Wei and will open the gates leading to Zhong Hui.

He reprises his role in the next installment. In the Xtreme Legends expansion, Hu Lie is an imprisoned general at Shangyong. If Jiang Wei defects, then he will help the Wei troops free Hu Lie, who will open the rear gate to Zhong Hui's camp as thanks.

In Warriors Orochi 3, Hu Lie appears as one of Zhong Hui's officers at Luoyang and is tasked with guarding Zhong Hui's throne room. Once the Coalition forces surround Hu Lie, he will surrender and open the throne room.

Quotes

  • "We can't follow Zhong Hui. We're surrendering to the Wei Forces"

Historical Information

Hu Lie was among the forces gathered to stop Zhuge Dan at Shouchun in 257. During the battle, he led an attack on Zhu Yi, and succeeded in destroying the Wu supplies. He later became one of Zhong Hui's subordinates for the campaign against Shu. During the campaign, Hu Lie was able to kill the enemy general, Fu Qian. After the campaign's end, Hu Lie was forced to join Zhong Hui's decision to rebel.

Jiang Wei, who also wanted to weaken Zhong Hui, stated that Hu and the other generals couldn't be trusted, so the two locked Hu with the other generals into a palace with the intention of killing them later. At this time, Hu Lie was able to have Qiu Jian escape, and inform Hu's son, Hu Yuan, of their predicament. Hu Yuan would lead his army to crush the rebellion.

After Zhong Hui's death, Hu Lie was ordered by Sima Zhao to assist Luo Xian, who was besieged by Wu's Lu Kang, by attacking Wu's position at Xiling. Hu Lie carried out his duty, and Lu Kang finally lifted his siege over Baidicheng. Hu Lie would later remain loyal to the Sima family as Wei later transitioned to Jin, and he would be assigned to govern over the frontier provinces to the west. Hu Lie remained in the Jing Province to help protect surrendering border areas from Wu.

While overseeing both the Liang and the newly-formed Qin province, a drought occurred leading to a widespread famine in the region. In response, Hu Lie seized farmland from the naturalized Xianbei tribes in Jin's northern and western fringes and neglected the same tribes when distributing rations. These actions were to have dire consequences as the tribes, already discriminated and repressed by the Han population since the time of Cao Cao, were pushed to the breaking point by the drought and famine. Under Tufa Shujineng's leadership, the oppressed tribes finally rose up in open rebellion. Hu Lie found himself outnumbered and quickly requested for reinforcements from Sima Liang and Liu Qi, but was killed before any help could arrive.
