Shu ordered Han Yin to negotiate with Lu Bu for an alliance. Yin took the proposal to Lu Bu, which would be solidified by a marriage between Yuan Shu's son and Lu Bu's daughter. Such an alliance would bring the might of Xu and Yang provinces together, a strength both Yuan Shu and Lu Bu desperately needed. At first, Lu Bu thought of accepting the offer but Chen Gui, who favored Cao Cao and Liu Bei, objected and argued the negative effects of the alliance with Yuan Shu. Lu Bu eventually agreed with Chen Gui's objections and ended the negotiations, taking his daughter back and arresting Han Yin. To gain favor with Cao Cao, Lu Bu handed Han Yin over to the future Duke of Wei, who had him executed and displayed his head at the market in Xuchang.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Han Yin first appears in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms as the ambassador sent by Yuan Shu to Lu Bu with lavish gifts, intended to bribe Lu Bu into inaction in protecting Liu Bei from an invasion by Yuan Shu himself. He also serves his historic role as the messenger who arranges the marriage alliance between Lu Bu and Yuan Shu, which he tries to keep concealed from Liu Bei's camp. It is Chen Deng, however, who deduced this scheme, tricking Han Yin into rushing the arrangement so Liu Bei could pressure Lu Bu into breaking it before it could be solidified. Lu Bu eventually arrests Han Yin when the potential alliance collapses, but dithers on what to do with Han Yin afterwards, despite Chen Gui encouraging Lu Bu to send him to Cao Cao for execution. Eventually Lu Bu consents and Cao Cao kills Han Yin in the marketplace of Xuchang.
