Historical Information
Guo Youzhi, style name: Yanchang (演長), was from Nanyang, Jing province. He was well-known for being a skillful and knowledgable person early on. Together with Fei Yi and Dong Yun, the three were treasured greatly by Liu Bei, who considered them great officials and talents. In the year 224, he was given the prestigious postions "Gentleman of the Yellow Gate (黃門侍郎)" and "Palace Attendant (侍中)". Zhuge Liang, admired Guo Youzhi greatly and praised him in the "Chu Shi Biao" as "exceedingly loyal and faithful". He advised Liu Shan to use his talents well along with Fei Yi and Dong Yun. After Zhuge Liang's death, he continued to serve Liu Shan faithfully and strongly opposed Jiang Wei's warmongering and Huang Hao's corruption.
Liao Li, a Shu official once criticized Guo Youzhi, with his dialogue being "Guo Yanchang blindly follows others. He doesn't have what it takes to do great things, yet he became a Palace Attendant". However, his evaluation is not to be taken seriously considering Liao Li's state of mind and motivations at the time suggest he was not accurate in his criticisms.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Guo Youzhi appears in Chapter 91 where Zhuge Liang praises him along with Fei Yi and Dong Yun as valuable talents. Later, he is sent with Fei Yi and Dong Yun to handle matters in the Imperial Palace.
