Historical Information

Chen Jiao was from the Guangling Commandery in Xuzhou. However, he moved to Jiangdong in an attempt to escape the growing conflict. While in Jiangdong, both Yuan Shu and Sun Ce attempted to recruit Chen Jiao, but he rejected their offers. Eventually Jiao returned to his hometown. Once returned home, Chen Jiao was invited by Chen Deng to come to work for him as he was the prefect of Guangling. One of the first tasks Deng gave Jiao was to visit Xucheng and learn how he was viewed by the officials in service to Cao Cao. Chen Jiao reported back that they considered Chen Deng arrogant, but Jiao himself didn't see him in such a light. The two were friends afterwards, with Jiao seeking aid from Cao Cao when Sun Quan began threatening their land.

Chen Jiao proved persuasive to Cao Cao, leading to him both taking over the care of Guangling and recruiting him to serve as his own minister. Chen Jiao was then sent to work with Cao Ren in maintianing the newly acquired Jiangling. Jiao's mettle was tested when the Wu army arrived, shortly after Wei's catastrophe at Chibi, and laid siege to the city. When Niu Jin was caught outside the city walls, Chen Jiao adviced abandoning him and his men to their fate to safeguard the city. Cao Ren rejected this advice and managed to save Nui and his soldiers. Jiao recognized his own error and praised Cao Ren as the only true man he'd ever met.

As time passed, Chen Jiao continued to serve Wei as a minister, ruling fairly over the lands under his control. Chen was a traditionalist and insisted on seeing most trails personally, ensuring his prisons were not overwhelmed and gaining much popularity among the people. Jiao was promoted to Minister of letters by Cao Cao shortly before the campaign in Hanzhong against Liu Bei, which Chen Jiao joined.

During the Cao Pi's rule, Chen Jiao was appointed Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Personnel and title of Lord of Gaoling. He was among those who supported Cao Pi becoming emperor and worked on the legal documents needed to confirm his ascension. He even advice the soon-to-be emperor to ensure he took the post shortly after his father's death to avoid any openings for those who opposed Cao Pi's authority. During the Cao Rui's rule, Chen Jiao was given the title of Lord of Dongxiang and appointed Privy Counselor coupled with Imperial Minister of State and Minister of Interior. Chen maintained his dutiful labor and even once offered to resign when Rui came to inspect his work, believing that he himself should have done good enough work that no special review from the emperor was needed.

Chen Jiao died in 237. During his life, he is respected by the people and was known as a righteous and happy yet calm person. He had three sons: Chen Ben, Chen Qian, and Chen Zhi.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

In the novel, Chen Jiao first appears in chapter 51, as one of Cao Ren's subordinates. He stands guard at the city gate and commands the crossbow unit that wounds Zhou Yu. He continues to defend the city until overwhelmed by the Shu forces, who snuck in while Cao Ren was distracted with Zhou Yu.

In chapter 78, Chen Jiao is among those supporting the movement to make Cao Pi emperor. He takes a sword and cuts off the sleeves of his robe to warn of the fate of anyone who opposes Cao Pi's appointment.
