Gochizo

This article is about a set of collectible devices in Kamen Rider Gavv.

The Gochizo (ゴチゾウ, Gochizō) are snack-like items used by the Riders in Kamen Rider Gavv.

Overview

Shoma's Gochizo

Gochizo are miniature monsters born from Shoma's gavv when he eats the corresponding snack.[1] A single type of Gochizo can come in different flavors.[2] The amount of Gochizo produced is not always equal to the amount of snacks eaten. Initially, they were simply referred to as Shoma's "kin" (眷属, kenzoku), before their name was coined by Sachika Amane upon seeing them for the first time, thinking them to be toys.[Transformation Is Bitter Chocolate]

The Gochizo communicate using a series of mumbles, which can seemingly be understood by Granutes. Their speech appears to be partially derived from Japanese onomatopoeia related to their type of snack. Although they can understand human language, they are only able to say a few words, such as "eat" and the type of food they originate from, mimicking the announcements of the Henshin Belt Gavv. The Blizzardsorbei and Frappeis Gochizo are capable of speaking short sentences in the Kansai dialect of Japanese. Otherwise, they can communicate using gestures. During Shoma's first battle, a large number of them assembled to form a moving image of his gavv in order to instruct him how to transform. Dente Stomach later created the Gavvphone, which allows the Gochizo to project what they've seen onto its screen.

As sentient creatures, the Gochizo can operate the Henshin Belt Gavv and Valenbuster themselves to a limited degree when needed, as seen when a Chocodan Gochizo kicked a Poppingummy Gochizo out and inserted itself into the belt to prompt Shoma to transform with it. They can be seen catching the destroyed armor of Poppingummy Form and lapping up the bullets fired from the Chocodangun, implying that they eat the snacks produced by Gavv in battle.[3]

The Gochizo die after they are used in the Henshin Belt Gavv, flying away with wings and halo as "Angel Gochizo"[4] (エンジェルゴチゾウ, Enjeru Gochizō) before disappearing. As they pass on, they murmur "I'm so happy. (幸せだぁ。, Shiawase daa.)"[5] According to Ho-Oh Kaguya Quartz's narration, the deceased Gochizo reside in heaven but can freely return as spirits.[Kamen Rider Gavv: Transformation Lessons] The Caking Gochizo is the only exception, being born from Shoma's own cooking coupled with his desire to repay Sachika's kindness, allowing Shoma to use it multiple times. Blizzardsorbei Gochizo will melt away after being used to transform once enough time passes.

Kenzo Suga stole some of the Gochizo and reverse-engineered a Chocodan Gochizo to create the Valenbuster for Hanto Karakida's use in order to fight Granutes. As Gochizo are only born from Shoma's gavv, Hanto has to steal or borrow them from Shoma whenever he runs out. Similar to the Henshin Belt Gavv, the Gochizo will also die after being used in the Valenbuster. They will disintegrate into particles of light or become Angel Gochizo when Valen's transformation is cancelled. However, using them will put burden on Hanto's body.[A Spoonful of Revival Ice Cream][Sour and Sweet to the Point of Burning]

Vram's Gochizo

After studying two of Shoma's Gochizo and reading Dente Stomach's documentation on his remodeling of Shoma, along with Kenzo Suga's research notes, Nyelv Stomach artificially created the Doppuding and Purujelly Gochizo from snacks given to him by Suga. They are designed to be used in the Vrastumgear by Rakia Amarga to transform into Kamen Rider Vram. Unlike normal Gochizo, they do not disappear after being used. After Rakia betrays Stomach Inc., the two Gochizo still follow Rakia on their own will and can co-exist with Shoma's Gochizo.

Dark Shoma's Gochizo

Dark Shoma can also create Gochizo through his gavv, much like Shoma. However, unlike Shoma, only specific snacks that Dark Shoma deems to satisfy his hunger will produce Gochizo. Dark Shoma is not aware of what foods will produce Gochizo until he eats them. Like Shoma's Gochizo, they become Angel Gochizo when their power is used up.

Functionality

Transformation

When activated in the Red Gavv, the Gochizo awaken with a shout and reveal their hidden faces. When activated in the Bitter Gavv, they awaken with an evil laugh. The Valenbuster, Vrastumgear, and Bakemagnum instead force the Gochizo into ready states to extract their abilities.

  • Henshin Belt Gavv/Henshin Belt Bitter Gavv: Shoma or Dark Shoma place a Gochizo on the tongue of their gavv, close the upper jaw on it, crank the handle, and press the side button to transform or use a Follow-up Snack Change.
  • Valenbuster: Hanto affixes a Gochizo into the Setter Coffin, closes the Crack Jack to awaken the Gochizo, fires the Valenbuster at the ground or a nearby surface, and makes contact with the point of impact to transform into Kamen Rider Valen.
  • Vrastumgear: Rakia or Hanto insert a Gochizo into the Reverse Coffin and lower the Fallternator, causing the Gochizo's contents to drop into the Tasteylinder and transform them.
  • Bakemagnum: Suga affixes a Gochizo into the Setter Coffin, closes the Crimson Jack to awaken the Gochizo, "chews" the Gochizo twice with the Crimson Jack, then fires the Bakemagnum to transform into Kamen Rider Bake.

Reconnaissance

The Gochizo regularly patrol Nagihama City in shifts to find Stomach Inc. activity and report it back to Shoma. The Gavvphone was made to display everything that a Gochizo has witnessed.

Behind the Scenes

Portrayal

  • The majority of Gochizo are voiced by Kouki Sakurai (櫻井 皓基, Sakurai Kōki) and Ayu Shoji (東海林 亜祐, Shōji Ayu), who also voice the Agents. Different audio filters are applied to the voice of each Gochizo depending on the category of snack it belongs to.[33]
  • The Blizzardsorbei Gochizo is voiced by Kazuki Kyan (喜屋武 和輝, Kyan Kazuki).
  • The Frappeis Gochizo are voiced by Hiroki Shimowada (下和田 ヒロキ, Shimowada Hiroki).

Etymology

The name of the Gochizo is derived from the Japanese words for "treating" or "feast" (ご馳走ごちそう, gochisō) and "depiction" or "statue" (, ). It also contains the masculine name ending "-zō," which is born out by the Blizzardsorbei and Frappeis Gochizo, which use the masculine name endings "-bē" (兵衛) and "-hei."

Many of the Gochizo are named after Japanese words or onomatopoeias, or incorporate them into their transformation announcements:

  • Zakuzakuchips & other Snack Gochizo: "zakuzaku" (ザクザク), representing a crunching sound or cutting something into large pieces.
  • Hirihirichips: "hirihiri" (ヒリヒリ), referring to a burning or stinging sensation.
  • Fuwamallow, Bushel: "fuwafuwa" (ふわふわ), describing something that is soft, fluffy, or buoyant.
  • Marumallow: "marumaru" (まるまる), describing something that is plump or rotund.
  • Choco Gochizo: "pakipaki" (パキパキ), the sound of something snapping in a satisfying way.
  • Chocodan & Chocodon: "dan" (ダン) and "don" (ドン), representing the firing of a gun.
  • Chocohone Form: "hone" (), meaning "bone."
  • Gurucan: "guruguru" (ぐるぐる), which refers to turning or spinning round and round, and "peropero" (ペロペロ), for the act of licking something.
  • Vrocan, Vrocanspicy: "buruburu" (ぶるぶる), the sound of shaking or rumbling, or "burun" (ぶるん), the sound of an engine. The spelling is influenced by the English onomatopoeia "vroom."
  • Bakucan: "explode" (, baku).
  • Doumaru: "mofumofu" (もふもふ), an onomatopoeia describing something that is soft and fluffy, and "circle" (, maru), a common name suffix literally meaning circle, such as the shape of a donut.
  • Doppuding: "doppuri" (どっぷり), referring to being totally immersed.
  • Purujelly: "purupuru" (ぷるぷる), representing trembling or jiggling, or "purun" (ぷるん), describing soft and jellylike things.
  • Blizzardsorbei: "bē" (ベー), an interjection used when taunting someone by sticking out one's tongue, and "hiehie" (ヒエヒエ), referring to a shivering sensation.
  • Frappeis: "sharishari" (しゃりしゃり), the sound of hard and thin things rubbing together or being bitten apart.
  • Bakibaki Stick: "bakibaki" (バキバキ), representing the sound of something hard cracking.
  • Byunbei: "byunbyun" (ビュンビュン), representing the sound of something fast whizzing by.

Notes

  • The Gochizo' opening gimmick is based on a gabu, a type of bunraku puppet with a head that can transform into a monstrous appearance in an instant. This serves as a pun, as gabu is pronounced the same way as "Gavv."
  • The standard Gochizo come in four basic shapes:
    • Gummy Gochizo, which open vertically and have appendages that pop out of the sides. The Kickingummy and Punchingummy Gochizo have unique versions of this mold with different appendages.
      • The Reiwa Legend Rider Gochizo based on Riders from Saber, Revice, and Gotchard use the same mold as the Poppingummy Gochizo.
    • Snack Gochizo, which have two panels on the front that swing open.
      • All of the Heisei Phase 2 Legend Rider Gochizo from W to Zi-O share a slightly different version of the design without the holes for the eyes.
    • Marshmallow/Candy Gochizo, which have a top that hinges open. There are three versions of this mold: one with a single horn in the middle of the head, one with two ears, and one with two curved horns.
      • All of the Heisei Phase 1 Legend Rider Gochizo from Kuuga to Decade share a unique variant of this design.
    • Chocolate Gochizo, which function the same as the Gummy type but are shaped to resemble a bar or box rather than a packet.
      • The Reiwa Legend Rider Gochizo based on Riders from Zero-One and Geats use the same mold as the Chocodan and Chocodon Gochizo.
  • The Zakuzakuchips and Hirihirichips Gochizo share the same mold, as do the Chocodan and Chocodon Gochizo.
  • The Bakucan, Kungfu Ramen, and Choco Treasure Gochizo do not share the same basic shape as the rest of their groups.
  • Some of the Legend Rider Gochizo show different forms of the Riders when opened. The Heisei Phase 2 Legend Rider Gochizo have their belts change when opened.
  • Several Gochizo have two sets of sounds programmed into the Henshin Belt Gavv, allowing them to be used for both forms and Assists.[34]
  • Although Bushel and Caking are both Cake Gochizo, they have separate sets of insertion and standby sounds in the Henshin Belt Gavv, Gavvgablade, and Henshin Belt Bitter Gavv. However, their sounds in the Valenbuster are shared.
  • Some Gochizo packaging designs are based on or inspired by that of real-world snack brands. In-universe, they are inspired by the packages of the fictional brands of snack consumed to create them.
    • Zakuzakuchips and Hirihirichips are based on Calbee's Seaweed & Salt Potato Chips and Hot & Spicy Potato Chips, respectively.
    • Chocodan, Chocodon, and Chocold are based on Meiji's Himilk chocolate, white chocolate, and dark chocolate bars, respectively.
    • Cookiekie is based on Morinaga's Moonlight Cookie.
    • Bubble Ramune Gochizo is based on Morinaga's Ramune Soda Candy.
    • Caramelmel is based on Morinaga's Milk Caramel.
  • The frappé that Shoma eats to create the Frappeis Gochizo is a Godiva Chocolixir.[35]
